"The World According to Garp" is maybe the funniest book I've read.
If you haven't read "Forrest Gump" you should.
It's way out there compared to the movie.

I was reading this on the toilet the other day. It is not funny.

"Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal" by Christopher Moore is a good read. It is a bit sophomoric, but it is hilarious to both Christians and atheists for different reasons.

"Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman." An autobiography by Richard P Feynman.
Just read that. Feynman is now one of my heroes though I'm not sure the book is all that funny (though Feynman was). Good read, very interesting and amusing at times.
For funny I'd go with Hitchiker's Guide, or one of Carl Hiaasen's (Striptease, Double Whammy, Stormy Weather...), or something by Dave Barry (he had an excerpt from a new book in the WSJ a few weeks ago that was funny as hell).
For extremely dark humor go with Martin Cruz Smith's Arkady Renko series (Gorky Park, Polar Star, etc).

Frequently amazingly funny but pretty brutal as well.

If you like outdoor humor, Patrick F. McManus is good. 'A Fine And Pleasant Misery' and 'The Grasshopper Trap' I especially enjoyed.
