Looking at maybe transferring into the LSU mechanical engineering program

how good is it compared to other programs in the South? Can’t find very many solid reviews or comparisons from students. Obviously not what we are known for but a lot of schools don’t take second bachelor students.
What schools would y’all recommend if not LSU?

As much as this pains me, aTm if you can get in.
Also look at Lamar, La Tech, and UH. I don’t know how good ULL’s is.

Why not just got the CM route? I finished with a CM degree a year ago and hold the same position as many mechanical engineers. I even make more than them

The people I know who did ME seemed to like it. It is much better than LSU Petroleum Engineering program where you have 100+ in every class.
ETA: I would not recommend LSU's Petroleum program to anyone.

What is LSU known for?
Also, what kind of job are you looking for? Do you want some relatively prestigious job right out of school? If so, then yeah, you probably need to look at getting into GA Tech or aTm/UT. You willing to work for a couple years before pulling in 6 figures, then LSU is more than adequate. And if you excel, you still have a shot at those really good jobs. Especially in Louisiana and East TX. I have a very comfortable career with an LSU ME degree and work with plenty of LSU grads.

My experience is that LSU ME is a meat grinder. A lot of the professors (but not all) really don't care if you pass or fail, you are totally on your own.

Yeah man as stupid as this sounds... I can’t even imagine being an Aggie. No matter how good that school is. UofH doesn’t sound too bad though I have looked into that a little.

Like any other undergrad degree, you get out what you put in. If you’re looking for a career in petrochem, LSU is just as well positioned as any of the other big state schools in the southeast.
If you’re looking to get into a field other than petrochem (say, aerospace or automotive) you probably want to shop around.
ETA: Not to say you can’t do aerospace with a degree from LSU. But the big factor here is who recruits heavily at a school. Due to location, LSU’s corporate recruiting base skews heavily toward petrochem.

Sounds like every engineering student I have talked to at other schools as well. Not really worried about that part tbh. More worried about how the facilities and education compare.

I graduated in ME at LSU. The program is fine, I did it in 5 years because I didn’t want to cram in 18-20 hrs a semester, so it was more manageable, plus I got to have a social life.
All the usual O&G/ Chemical companies recruit the program, so it probably has one of the higher starting salaries for kids graduating compared to other schools.

Yeah I am not really that interested in Petrochem personally, and more interested in the latter.

If you want to go into aerospace or automative - La Tech offers aerospace engineering, but I'd look into what main schools Boeing/Airbus US recruit from and look into those. LSU's engineering program is generally (but not exclusively) geared towards O&G / petrochem.

Personally, I really enjoyed the program and my education that got from LSU ME. The staff wasn’t perfect but it was diverse and there were some passionate instructors that would absolutely take time to ensure that students were understating the subjects. Sometimes it felt a bit crammed like stuffing a lot of material into one semester. Also there are some lock-step courses that are only offered in certain semesters which can really mess things up logistically if you were to use a W or fail. The lab facilities were a little dated when I was there but those may have been improved. The workshop is made available for students who would like to use heavy tools for prototyping, etc. At the end of it all, there were dumbasses who didn’t get through, and the people who did make it through are generally well regarded in my own opinion. I know people who have gone on to various fields besides O&G as well.

LSU is great.
If you live in SWLA or SETX, Lamar is a good option. I have some really good engineers from there. Not sure about LA Tech, I am sure it is a good choice. UH from my experience has a great MechE program. ULL I do not think is as good, I am only familiar with it being a good business/CS/EE school.

They just renovated CEBA (Engineering building) a few years back and from what I heard it’s a huge upgrade. UT and A&M are more superior, but LSU is still pretty comparable. Just don’t take out a bunch of loans just to have a particular school printed on your degree.
