it would be excessively tight ... not saying it couldn't be done, but op has 3 kids i believe ... that's a big house ... vestavia's a bit bigger, so that's probably an easier bet ...

There are houses under 400k range right now on Zillow. Mountain brook is literally cheaper than my school district in Texas, and it is way fricking better.

Edit: y’all are some cheap fricks. If one is buying a house to live in forever, 2.5x over ones salary is really not a big deal. I’m not sure I would consider living in another area of Birmingham besides there.

Yeah. No doubt you can live a comfortable life in a safe bham suburban area on 150k, but you aren't living the high life.

Take the job.

Live in suburbs.

It's great.

And I-20/I-65 near downtown. Gumps are shite drivers as a whole but get a bunch of them in traffic and it's retards on parade. There are a few redeeming qualities in Birmingham's favor though, more so than Memphis.

Buy land in Blount County, commute south, and send kids to Indian Springs.

There are some other decent suburbs other than Mountain Brook. I wouldn't live in Birmingham proper with 3 kids though. It suffers from the same issues as many other southern cities like Jackson, Montgomery, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Memphis etc. High crime and bad schools.

The OT has unprecedented hatred for Ohio.

Give me some evidence Birmingham is a better city than Cincinnati. Cue the Dbag’s

Median home value in Mountain Brook is $633k and MB has much higher property taxes than any other suburb.

Yeah, and that's brought down by some of the houses at the edges that aren't quite as nice. If you drive through MB proper, like Cherokee Road or near the country club, you'll see what it's all about.

ETA: The only place comparable is the monsters on Shades Valley (I think that's the name, it's off Columbiana).

My wife was born and raised in Mountain Brook. The stories she tells me of her friends are astounding. It wasn’t uncommon for them to take spontaneous weekend trips to Manhattan to go shopping.

I have relatives there. I remember asking my cousins if they had any minorities at their school.

"Yeah, there are a few Jewish kids."

This should be an easy call. B'ham is much better than St. Louis, and a big improvement over where you are now. With where you would be working, you could easily live in Vestavia and maybe even Mt. Brook. You should go.

If OP has kids and they can somehow finaggle their way in to a place in Mountain Brook, I'd still suggest against it. They'll feel like complete poors among their peers, and they will be made well aware of it.

I get what you are saying, but there are a lot of people of more modest means in the Brook. If the OP doesn't like it, Vestavia is a great option too.

I work on Acton Rd.

Look around in that area. If you don’t have kids, there are houses in that area that are county and not in Vestavia or Hoover. They will be at a discount compared to houses in the city limits.

Commuting to Acton from the 280 area is a breeze. Commuting from the Galleria to Acton Rd is hell.

There’s plenty to do in Bham. It’s a pretty cool place these days.

Given the pick of anywhere in Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama, I think the best theoretical choice is Birmingham.

Personal preference would probably be Fairhope or Auburn, but Birmingham is a good all-around choice for anyone looking in the region. Pretty much every negative comment in here is outdated, and I'm no real advocate of Birmingham and have no real tie to it.
