In college I hiked in the Grand Canyon.
We had two classmates who didn't think, decided to hike on their own, instead of going in an organized group and using miles, who hiked down. Got to the bottom and wound up having to call for help to get back up.

Did a little over 22 miles hiking up and down Mt Whitney in one day.
Are you from Huntington Beach? I had some friends who left HB after work on Friday, drove to Whitney Portal, day hiked Whitney on Saturday, spent the night at Whitney Portal and drove back to HB on Sunday.
I wouldn't go with them because it sounded crazy to me. Sea level to ~15,000' in about 15 or 18 hours, and back down again. IIRC, it's about a 22 mile round trip with ~6,500' of elevation gain and loss. That's a long day!

Spoken like someone truly ignorant of the process.
I think he's asking about thru hikers.
In my experience on the AT, every thru hiker I met was either on summer break from school, unemployed/between jobs, or retired. I'm sure there are a few who are able to take 3, 4 or 6 months off from their job, but it can't be very many.
Section hiking is a completely different story.

Long's Peak.
Did you traverse over to Torrey's Peak to bag two 14ers in one day?
I did that hike on 9/11/2001. Somebody at the trailhead told me planes had hit both towers. I told him he must have misheard the report or some local shock jock was trying to pull off his own version of War of the Worlds or trying a bad out of season April Fools gag. Went back to my car to turn on the radio. Listened for only a couple of minutes when the Pentagon was hit. Left and did my hike. Got back a few hours later and the guy who originally told me about it was still at the trailhead. He told me both towers collapsed. I couldn't fricking believe it. Packed my shite and drove to Denver, got a hotel room and sat in front of the TV for about 12 hours. Left in the morning and drove straight through to New Orleans (which I don't recommend).

From L.A.
It is a long day. Camped at the portal. Woke up at 3am to start our way up. Had a schedule to make sure we were making good time. One of our guys got altitude sickness about 2/3 of the way there but toughed it out. Basically ran down the mountain to get to the portal in time to grab a beer and some food.

Longest day hike was 20 miles on Cumberland Island (it was flat and I didn't need to carry much. Pretty easy hike).
The longest I've done full pack in a day is 5 miles. Pretty rough with elevation changes. 5 miles back out was easier, but we had rain to cool us off on the trip.

32 mile trek in SFAS in the summer heat at Camp Mackal. It sucked.

Ran a three mile cross country race. Had a friend drop me off at home. I forgot that I had left my car at the high school so I walked about 5 miles to the HS parking lot. Caught the last minutes of LSU beating USCw in the Coliseum in LA. 1984.

At least you had a while at 8,600' (or whatever the elevation at Whitney Portal is) to get partially acclimated. I was always very strong up to about 13,600 or 13,800 and then the altitude hit me hard. I've only been that high four times - Long, Torry's, Mt Elbert and My Whitney - but it happened every time. I actually began to think it was psychological and that I was just mind fricking myself. Real or imagined, I had to really take my time above that altitude.

Not exactly a hike, but I have backpacked and canoed a couple different trips in Quetico Providential Park. Travel an average 15 miles a day.

16 miles in about 8 hours in TN. Feet hurt like hell. Did 10 out the next day
Posted on 5/4/18 at 11:30 pm to Pear
Feet are definitely the kryptonite on these long hikes. The most in shape person who could run 10 marathons in 10 days can be destroyed by someone of small stamina whose feet stay intact.
Where were one was largely swayed by the treatment of trench foot.

From Happy Isles, IIRC, it's ~17 miles and ~4,400' of elevation gain and loss. The trail can get really crowded, particularly by the waterfalls and at the cables. Like traffic jam crowded in the afternoon. Best to start very early. You'll beat most of the crowd and will probably need 7 or 8 hours, if not more.
