In the thread by CatsGoneWild the issue of children whose mothers are drug addicts came up. I guess I never really thought about it, but with the number of addicts we see today, I am sure there are a lot of kids who are being born by a mother who is using during her pregnancy. These children are being born with learning disabilities, other mental health issues, etc. Will this be something that will have an affect on society.. 15-20 years from now?

I know this happened with crack and you would hear the term "crack babies" being used. I wonder how many of these "crack babies" are now a burden on society. Are they likely not to graduate high school and end up being a criminal?

We're already seeing it now in high-poverty, high-crime areas.

I've thought about this and the long term effects on pregnant mothers being on ssri's. This drug chemically rearranges your brain and I would guess the child brain in the the womb.

If a child's mother is an addict, do they run a high risk of being born with a learning disability or mental illness or is it a sure thing?

We're seeing the effects of addiction (opioids and h) everywhere. Most people with a reasonable social circle have probably known someone that got effected. And many times it's completely unexpected, people with careers and families and such.

Sure ssri. Your brain becomes very dependant on the drug just like many addictive drugs. Have you ever weaned off a narcotic? How about a ssri? Ssri is ten times worse

I'm speaking more so about the effect on children born to someone who is addicted. He asked if we would see it in 10-15 years. We're already seeing it in urban areas and have been for a few years now as these kids get into middle/high.

As you pointed out, it's now creeping into all facets of society and we'll see it trickle down to kids in those areas as well.

Uh. No.

I know people who go on and off SSRIs, both weaning off and switching drugs.

And I have known people who have had tried to get off narcotics. Not even in the same ballpark. Heroin changes the brain in ways SSRIs simply cannot do. Jails and rehab facilities are full of former opiod addicts. But anti depressant addicts? Give me a fricking break.
