Sounds like prior to Elon, Twitter employees absolutely had it made.

I think Elon is being an absolute arse on purpose because he wants a clean slate of new employees so he doesnt constantly have to hear about, "well under previous CEO, we always did it this way"

They were paying $400 per employee or something insane like that.

Or maybe he sees a company bleeding cash and is trying to fix it.

Google, Facebook/Meta, Uber, Lyft, and about a half dozen other major Silicon Valley tech firms are laying off well over 12,000 employees.

Twitter can bring in whoever they want. Musk knows it.

The work environment is crazy though when it comes to some of these tech companies. And employees have zero loyalty when the perks fall off.

They don't have many options now. A lot of lay offs in big tech.

And have any of you ever worked for FAANG companies? I don't even think the 80/20 rule applies there. 90%+ of employees stroll in around 9AM (if at all), work lazily for a few hours, get in line for lunch around 12:30 and eventually get back to their work station around 1:30. They are gone by 5 sharp.

It's difficult to find anyone that can answer any questions about specific bits of functionality because nearly everyone you speak to has been there less than 6 months. They usually report to people who have been there less than a year (who also have no idea what they are doing). And they in turn report to someone who has to oversee dozens and dozens of projects and has no idea how to measure or even define success for any of them.

And the best employees stick around for 4-5 years max before leaving. Most 1-2 years before they move on. 50% will rotate through another FAANG company or possibly the "next best thing". The other 50% of those that leave will move on to Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Phoenix, or one of the Texas cities for a better lifestyle with a different company.

The difference is that the 5% or so of employees that actually demonstrate real creativity with their deliverables produce SO much value that the company can afford to let the other 95% ride their coat tails. Tesla alumni, including Musk, know this better than most. If you are skilled enough to spot talent and remain lean, you'll do well there. If you let yourself get bloated before you are actually large enough to expand by acquisition...you are going to get in a creative rut and eventually fail.

The laws of capitalism do work in silicon valley. They just work slower than in most normal industries.

Amazing how sheltered you must be to get lavish pay and perks while your company is hemorrhaging money. No wonder they’re political, social and economic idiots

Yep. Silicon Valley people have no idea what the real world is like. They are used to playing ping pong half the day.

Are you basing the $35 on a full occupancy rate or 10%-20% rate? He’s basically eliminating a perk that tech companies have provided, and treating Twitter like the rest of his companies. This perk is completely unrelated to the per diem that some in this thread keep referring to. Most Fortune 500 companies don’t provide free meals to office based employees (some may provide a partial subsidy). Tech companies are now entering the real world-they better get used to it.

Meals were always prepared off a forecasted occupancy. As examples, on Fridays and before holidays not as much food was prepared.

My current tech company still provides free breakfast, lunch and snacks but I’m not arguing with you on the “real world” aspect.

I’ve met some of the biggest corporate babies working in the tech world. As an example, we held a monthly meeting where employees could submit questions to the CEO. You can ask anything on financial performance, corporate strategy etc. I kid you not someone once asked if the soap dispensers could be reprogrammed to dispense more soap so we don’t have to put our hands under the nozzle more than once.

Another example, after Covid hit and we are working from home someone asked if we had someone in office taking care of the plants left behind.

I love tech because the benefits and compensations are unmatched but people who have worked for these kinds of companies their whole lives don’t have a great grasp on the real world

One of my clients are a pre-revenue tech company, and I've worked in San Mateo for a tech company before the pandemic. A lot of the stereotypes mentioned in this thread hold true.

Also sort of unrelated - I used to love visiting Silicon Valley for client work before the pandemic. The culture has shifted definitely, and not in a good way. The tech business is even more transient now than it was, and a lot of the friends I had there have moved on. A lot of my favorite restaurants from the area are closed or work truncated hours. There's way more homelessness and crime than there were just a couple of years ago. It's just not as cool of a place anymore. And rent/COL is just as high as ever.

I hate going out there and actually feel sorry for a lot of the people there now. They are mostly just doing their time and building their resume. They'll eventually use that to take jobs in other parts of the country (Arizona, Texas, Virginia, Florida) where their comp will go much farther.

Just playing devil's advocate but how do we know that Musk is retaining that 5% at this point? The mass layoffs happened days after acquisition. Now he's ordering everyone back in the office 40 hours a week. You've got to think that twitter lost fat and muscle.

The highly motivated, ambitious employees were already back in person, in meetings, and among their peers.

The $400/lunch is bizarre to me. I can only assume that's because they basically had a contract to server X people at Y cost regardless of how many actually came to lunch.

I'm guessing these dudes aren't eating truffles and duck sauce. (or whatever crazy meal would cost 400$)

I'm in the industry. I've noticed the evolving culture since the pandemic. The ones that want to be there will show up. And they mostly tend to be more productive.

Many others will continue to feign concerns over safety to avoid being their in person. Never mind that the rest of the country has long since returned to a cadence resembling normal by now. That's not going to continue especially with big layoffs among FAANG.

At least short term, Twitter has some leverage over employee behavior and culture.

Louisiana shrimpers saying the highly educated, innovative and well traveled workers of Silicone Valley have no grasp of the real world. Impressive.

No argument here. The fat will be trimmed

I’ve met a lot of the people you described too. Feigning safety over health risks to “rest and vest” or coast.

I worked for Epic years ago. Campus was beautiful and we got free lunch, snacks, and beverages. Also, free games, movies, and books. Problem is, you were considered lazy if you worked less than 10 hours a day. All these perks are for luring in talent, but once you get there, you don't have time or energy to enjoy them.
