Local furniture shopping vs. North Carolina furniture direct?

Is there a cost savings to be had by buying through North Carolina furniture direct (any of their companies that set up shop in NC)?
I've looked at a couple of local furniture stores in BR and the mark-up is tremendous compared to the quality and value one would receive.
Just curious as to how many have gone this route and is it worth it?
Edited to type ... we're looking for children's furniture for a 7 year old and 10 year old. We would like to purchase something that will "grow" with them.

I have not personally done it, but do know a few folks that have...
according to them, you can save some money doing that. the downside that I see is that a time or two, they were sent furniture with drips in the varnish, etc. and had to reject it when delivered...
seems that if you are not in a hurry to get your furniture and are sure to look it over well when it arrives, it is a good way to go...

Where are you shopping locally?
Quality varies greatly by store is why I ask.

I'm not in a hurry. My wife, however ... may be?
I just want a "good deal." The crap I have seen at Basset, Christian Street Furniture, Pottery Barn, Rooms To Go and Stoma's don't represent value to me.

I live in NC and understand what you are seeing with the big box furniture stores that have crazy prices for veneer wood furniture, etc.
We did the furniture row thing but we can get free shipping to Raleigh from the Furniture Row store up in the mountains.
I would just suggest you check out what the shipping costs will be to get the furniture to your location before you go, I think they vary greatly and would probably answer the question of whether or not its worth it for you.

The Furniture Mart in Hickory, NC is where the bargains are, but I don't know about shipping.

We bought a dining room set from nc years ago. Picked it out a kornmeyers, got model numbers, called and ordered. This was pre internet. Cost savings was 30% or about $600. Shipping cost was roughly equal to sales tax. Visited kornmeyers after it arrived and they were identical.

quote:I would agree on some but they have some decent stuff mixed in. At least at the main store they do. I would say on average it is better than ashley or bassett. We have some Bernhardt pieces that we got there. He said it was for his kids room, I doubt he wants to spend 10k a room he's looking for "value"

Go to Pennsylvania or Ohio and buy Amish furniture. Look up a store called Penny Mustrard. They sell Amish but they are a middle man so it's expensive.

We did it probably 20 years ago if not more. Found what I liked at a furniture store in BR and actually found it at a small "outlet" or whatever it's called.
I sort of felt bad about stiffing the furniture store BUT I walked in, saw what I loved and got the numbers from the sales guy and he did nothing else.
We saved a $1000 but I still sort of feel bad about it. But geeze the mark up.
