I've noticed as of late, there is a lot of crap on Amazon that is cheaper than local stores, but it is NOT the same product. And when it is the same product, the price difference is often very small.
My problem with some local businesses rarely comes down to price. It's usually
1) Not being open enough hours on the day / weekend for me to actually visit
2) Charging credit card fees
3) Not rotating enough stock, so food products are closer to expiration
4) Lack of options / only one or two brands of something.

Local businesses inflating their margins
When the small businesses only buy 1 case vs the online store that buys 1 pallet the online store gets a bigger discount through the distributor, so although it might be 5 to 10 higher in the small business the mark up is relatively the same.

What about all the thousands of mom and pop local stores that now have access to millions of customers selling through Amazon? Customers that are hundreds of miles away that would never have stepped foot in their store?

This is pretty much what most people do. Cheapest wins, which is why we must tariff China.

Economies are much more complicated than that. Just saying that buying local is always better for the local economy is not true. Does spending more on education automatically make better students? No.

That Amazon driver has a job and pays taxes at a state, local, and federal level.
I'm not gonna support local if they make a shite product or are just a middleman with mediocre service or long lines.
Those people can also sell online too and if they are really good at it they can sell in all the states via Amazon, or eBay, or Etsy or directly off their website.

So what's your cutoff % wise before you run off to Daddy Bezos?

I never said they weren’t but the money multiplier effect is a real thing and the idea that spending $100 nationally and $100 locally are equal because both collect sales tax is incredibly shortsighted.

Buying local is overwhelming better for the local economy in the long run.

What does this have to do with anything?

You think Amazon, who likely sells a lot more units of that product, gets it at the same price as the local store that probably sells about 5% (if that) of what Amazon sells?
If there is a huge price gap you can't blame people for buying it at a cheaper price. But at the same time, that is what hurt small businesses.
But without going into it, of course I am a capitalist, however; as much as it is better for the consumer... overall, I do not think all of these companies that have caused small businesses to crumble are not good for the economy..
My argument is much more detailed. I even once wrote about it in a political science class and was told that my idea takes us out of the "global market" and would not survive (this was,, 17-18 years ago), but in summary, my argument is that small business should be the backbone of our economy, Even with the global market, small business is still 44% of our economy, but for the middle class (which is also the backbone of our economy), it would be better if small businesses were able to flourish.
