Rip Van Winkle Gardens and Lake Peigneur are both pretty interesting spots to check out as well right by there
40th anniversary of salt mine breach creating Louisiana’s deepest lake

Interesting place, but doesn't really play a big part in the state's "French and Acadian history." McIlhenny was a WASP transplant, who married into an older WASP transplant family who had owned the place basically since Louisiana became a state..

Some Acadians were German

The maps posted are illustrative of earlier time periods, but in 1803 France ceded all of its territory west of the Mississippi River and the "Isle of Orleans" to the US. England took control of the "Florida Parishes" for a few years.
There's an old book titled "Under Ten Flags" that I read as a child. It was a fascinating look into Louisiana's convoluted history.

I could be wrong, but didn’t the British have the Florida parishes well before 1803? I thought after the British lost the Revolutionary War the Florida parishes ended up with Spain, which held the rest of Florida.

Is he in 8th grade? That's when they teach Louisiana history. It's 6th grade world history, 7th grade US history, and 8th grade Louisiana history. I started taking a strong interest at 13-14 about what Louisiana history was from my classes. Too bad my 8th grade teacher put on the most fricking boring PBS documentaries about Bienville, Iberville, and all that stuff. Never taught himself, just PBS videos.

It’s very brief and mostly focuses on the LA purchase more than anything.
This isn't true as of 2007. Louisiana schools spend the entire 8th grade history curriculum on just Louisiana history.

You're correct. The British had dominion over the Florida Parishes from 1763 ( the end of the French and Indian War) until the War of 1812. (I had to look it up ... D'oh!)
There were so many wars and changes of colonial territories that it's difficult to follow unless you're a history major.

Yeah 40 years ago plenty was still normal. They hardly even teach American history anymore.
I don't know what y'all are talking about but in 2007, Louisiana schools spend entire 7th grade on American History, and entire 8th grade on Louisiana history. That is 1 hour every school day on it.
As of 2010, they spend entire 11th grade on American history and 9th grade on Civics/Free Enterprise (has a lot of American history intertwined).
I don't know about today, but I doubt Louisiana schools changed this.
