Those beams bounce off the screen on the far end. They tilt the screen slightly to adjust the azimuth of the beam.

Went to a TEDx event at the Livingston Parish Library (don’t laugh) over the summer and they had one of their lead research scientists speak at the first presentation. She was psyched and on not a lot of sleep. They had just discovered their 4th ever detection the night before. She spilled the beans to us and then asked them to delete it off the video and promised us to secrecy as they had to confirm it with their other site.
Her discussion distilled the science down and it was fascinating. They brought recordings and she slowed them down to incredibly slow speeds. Between her talent for simplifying the subject matter and her genuine love for the subject, it was completely engrossing.
As others have said, it validated Einstein’s theories and it opened up new ability to build on validated research. This guy was doing physics as a side hustle back then about like we are posting on a message board in our spare time...and was able to work out physics theories so advanced it’s taken billions of dollars and centuries of technological advances just to test and confirm that he was right.
His brilliance can’t be overstated.

I've been out there before. Really cool place. They put it in Livingston because it is the perfect distance and location from their facility in Washington state for what they need for their tests (facilities work in unison with one another) and it just so happened LSU owned the land where it is located and was willing to sell or provide it for the LIGOS project. The instruments there are really sensitive to any vibrations so it helps it's in the middle of nowhere as well. To give you an idea of how sensitive they are, when I was there their instruments were picking up vibrations from an earthquake off the eastern coast of Greenland.

They had problems with the locals shooting the tubes with .22 rifles, apparently causing really cool and loud vibrations. They shut that down with the quickness. Lol.
