The Axeman murders about 100 years ago. I don't believe anyone was ever brought to justice for those horrifying, completely random acts of slaughter.

Ray Davies of the kinks got shot in New Orleans a few years ago but obviously survived. That would have been the most notorious had he died

if I recall he was chasing a purse snatcher

Remember the last time some dude was gunned down in mid-city? What's the difference? This story stinks. Will Smith wasn't planting tulips.

1. David Hennessy - This still has to be the most notorious murder in New Orleans with the subsequent lynching of the Sicilians.

2. Robert Charles killing the police officers and his subsequent demise- Had the whole city and much of the South up in arms.

Mark Essex.

quote:

Mark James Robert Essex (August 12, 1949[1] – January 7, 1973) was an American mass murderer who killed nine people, including five policemen, and wounded 13 others in New Orleans on December 31, 1972 and January 7, 1973.

the 23-year-old took up radical Black Panther politics and developed an intense hatred for the police. He came to the city to meet up with a friend who shared his politics.

This had to be the low point in Nola's history. The 90's were bad with much more violent crime that we have now and this was just too much.

No murder in NOLA will ever top the assassination of the Chief of Police Hennessey.

Know both the stories first hand, but Frank was one sick chick. She was involved with the killing of her own partner, who had had a child not a week prior, for a couple hundred dollars. She also may have killed her father and buried him at her house. Killer with a Badge is a pretty good book about it all.

What about the guy right after Katrina that chopped up his girlfriend and stored her body parts in their apartment? Didn't he jump off a building?
