You have to admit, the average citizen of Mamou is probably at least border line retarded

This is great for the small mom and pop stores in those small towns.
I remember New Roads fought against the new WM Supercenter being built for a while.
I think people who love the mom and pop idea aren't always thinking it through. Wal-Mart's success benefits everyone who owns shares- which is basically anyone who has a retirement plan or other money invested in the stock market.
Mom and pop shops only benefit mom and pop and the 4 or 5 people who work there. And usually not even those 4 or 5, bc they are too small to offer any benefits and/or they keep their hours under full time so they don't have to offer benefits.

theory behind that is profits stay in town. If I have the choice I'm shopping local.

I get that, but OTOH, if mom and pop have no competition, they set the market price on goods. For $100 of groceries at Wal-Mart, I'll probably pay $115-130 at the local m&p. I'm all for helping out a fellow towns person, but I prefer to keep that extra $100 or so a month for myself and my family, not theirs.

They don't keep it they spend it within the town. Maybe they utilize your or your employers services.

Maxwell's market and Fresh Pickins are pretty legit. I don't know if Maxwell's is "local" though

I like maxwells a lot, as far as I know BR, here and Shreveport are only locations.
My go to is champagnes in the oil center, will be able to walk there when I move.

But more often than not, those shops rape small town customers with high margins because there isn't much competition. Walmart gets by on less margin.

I haven't been to Champagne's since they gave their place a facelift. I heard it's really nice.
Where are you moving that's that close to the Oil Center?

And I get going to the little shop if it's right there or you just need 1 or 2 things. But the ones that truly suffer are the poor. Presumably, since all of us have internet access and a Saturday free to post on the internet, we're all at least working/middle class. But poor small town people with no car to drive to the larger town to buy groceries get stuck paying $4 for a box of cereal, $1.99 for a can of soup, $1.80 for crappy enriched white bread. Same three items would be about $5 at Wal-Mart for name brand items, mom & pop charges them $7.79.

Sorry ya'll are poor over there and can't keep your Walmarts operating in the black.

Actually, the fact that these Wal-Mart stores are closing indicates that the communities they serve are well off enough that they don't need the Wal-Mart?
Sorry you don't know how emoticons work.

Good. Give them a chance to bounce back.

Ours was never crowded. They slid in when Kmart went under up here. Probably never more than a couple dozen cars in the lot on a regular basis

They just opened that wal Mart in independence, I guess they will just have a brand new empty building.
Hopefully, this will open the door for some mom & pop stores to open up in some of those better locations - as in the Independence one.

Damn...I was hoping all of them were closing.

Mom n pop stores paid less thanwalmart and charged more for merchandise. Weird how popular they are, in theory
