I was born in '86 and I can say it has never been "cool" to be racist in my lifetime. Outside of fringe extremists like the Klan who have been monumentally insignificant since the 60's and 70's, legitimate racism is pretty nonexistent. People like Shannon and co's perception of racism and reality aren't necessarily congruent. Hence now we have the narrative of "white privilege," wherein racism is supposedly existent "subconsciously" and "structurally." Lots of abstractions that don't require any legitimate measures of verification of standards of proof.

Prejudice can and does exist in many different forms and ALWAYS will, but the idea that people are cool with killing people or treating them like less than human in this country today on account of their race or that it is systemic is bullshite. The term racism in popular usage has taken a dramatic departure from what it used to legitimately define.

Well said. I was born in '88.

I think there's also been a bit of unrest of late in some sectors of society that want to see themselves as on par with the civil and social rights champions of yore. A noble goal, but attempting to equate anything going on on those fronts in 2016 makes it very easy to fall prey to manufacturing bogeymen where few (or none) truly exist.

I hear some of my peers talk about minority "oppression" today in the USA, and think about folks like my Albanian war refugee neighbors in Greece who would have GLADLY traded limbs and health for the chance to live some of those here who consider themselves racially oppressed. It's just a narrative that I cannot support in good conscience.

I think there are people out there who NEED something to make them feel like they have a cause, or a driving force to fight for something and it's easy to find it in this current sociopolitical climate. There are leaders of these movements who manipulate this human impulse for their own political agendas IMO. I know many people who were once never into these kinds of movements who now, because of social media and, well regular media , are activists against some civil oppression in this country that apparently they didn't see several years ago.

Yeah, I've seen that phenomenon with a lot of my (usually liberal) friends the past 5-10 years. Like I said, I think it comes from a good place of wanting to make a difference/be a leader for justice/always strive for improvement/what-have-you, but it ends up coming off as playing the victim card because they try so hard to convince you there's a massive problem, when in reality, you have sporadic unfortunate incidents. That's going to happen in a country this large/diverse, and not that far removed from ACTUAL systemic racial oppression on a large scale.

This. Especially the bolded. My wife and I just came from a gathering of volunteers at our church. Our small group consists of the following couples:

--Black male/white female

--Black male/Peruvian-American female

--Latino male/white female

--Black male/white female (my wife and I)

--White male/white female

--Latino male/latino female

And all of those couples have kids except for us It's just remarkable, and it's becoming more and more common. THAT'S the way to end racism the quickest. Everybody get to frickin' each other
