In some ways, yes. In some ways, no.

Were you in the job/career that you always wanted? Were you married with kids? Were you a home-owner?

No to all.

I'm about to hit 40 and my life is much worse now. On the positive side, I'm 10 years closer to death.

That’s because you’re a communist and are beginning to outlive your usefulness to the state

"All possibilities exist simultaneously in space-time".
The numerology of your birth is different. Your astrology is different. The only pattern that's the same is you know them.
Go easy on the guilt and figure out what could be next.
"All possibilities exist simultaneously in space-time".

Ill give you advice, guidance.
Master your breath.
The breath is senior to the emotions. That means you can ameliorate fear sorrow and anger.

Set aside 10 minutes a day every day. There are entire books on pranayama. Here goes: see how long you can comfortably hold your breath. Write it down.
Next. Alternate long slow exhale with 4 second inhale and 2 second holding breath. 5 seconds exhale, then in a few days, 6 seconds.
Eventually you will get inhale up to 8 or 10 and exhale to 20. Does not matter when.
Just do it.
Measure how long you hold, once a day. Record.

If you write down a couple goals you really want to achieve you probably will.
Do the work.
2,500 hours practice under mentor coach or apprenticed.
You'll be a pro.
5,000 to be journeyman.
Most skills take 7,500 to master, some 10,000.

Man you can't be comparing yourself to others. That's a sure way to send yourself into depression or something. Just do you and don't worry about others.

I was just getting it all on track. I played a lot in my 20s. At age 30 I got my career on track and everything else fell into place.

You should never be really content with where you are, it leads to stagnation of the soul, but it should be more than making more money, getting titles, and bigger houses. Life should be a journey of discovering, and trying new things.

Your peers are likely either in debt, miserable, or scared in some way. The race is a show.

When I was 30 I was living in a commune I had cofounded.
Sex and drugs and rock n roll.
All the others were either getting masters or starting a business. I was in mba program. I was studying spiritual authors and while I lived there I found a guru I studied with my whole life.

I had it easy when I was 30. My wife was a go getter and became vp of IT of a famous entity. I quit my day job for 6 months and directed little theater. I played basketball, tennis and chess well.

I was able to get work in computer environments by reciting facts I had memorized.
I was glib too.
There are things I love about the process of producing computer systems but most of it is routine, boring repetitive or scary.
The human element is like a jungle.

I'm going to save you some time and heartache. Don't compare your life and your path to someone else's. Keep moving along in your life and achieve things at the pace you see fit. Maybe you know someone who founded their own company by the time they were 30 and you're still punching a clock. THAT'S OKAY. Life isn't a race. Set goals and work to achieve them. You'll get there, be patient. Life isn't a competition. Don't get down on yourself just because you haven't hit every single goal you've set for yourself.

I'm 32. I'm married, have a kid on the way and own a house. If some celestial power offered a possibility to trade with you, I would definitely think about it.

This all sounds good until reality hits.
