What's the bare minimum physical capability to assume such a position?

For instance, in the Wal-Mart I had to go into just the other day, the greeter was an old woman sitting on a chair and clearly had some type of a stroke at one point, or had a disability making her almost entirely incapable of moving her hands or arms, and add that to the fact that she could barely speak.

Is this normal for Wal-Mart?

Does she really get paid more than she'd get in welfare?

Drawing breath. I don't see what the big deal is, some of these people at that age have lost everyone close to them and would prefer human interaction to wasting away on their couch. They're being paid to people watch

I thought Walmart got rid of greeters years ago.

IMO, it's somewhat nice to see these employees trying to earn some money and being productive in their terms. Just a little way that Walmart is trying to show they are "all about the community".

Why don't old people and the handicapped just stay in their homes until they die. No one wants to see that.

What does it matter if Walmart thinks it's worth paying her?

The people I question are the ones that I have to deal with in order to get what I went there for.

Just as useless as the workers who want to "check" your receipt on the way out.

Exactly. There's something admirable about that. There's a lot of old folks who have retired and are well past staying in their careers that can't stand to just sit around and do nothing. This gives them a little purpose in life.

I love how you're all superior and condescending, yet you shop at Wal Mart

I feel like you described the physical capabilities of just about all Wal Mart workers

For all the shite we talk about Wal-Mart, its pretty cool that they make it a point to hire elderly, disabled, and special needs people. Sad part is that the elderly, disabled, special needs employees are better than the able bodied ones.

I have a side business where I take life like manikins and dress them up as Walmart Greeters. I put them in wheelchairs and make seven dollars an hour off them. Walmart doesn't know the difference.

You can make yourself think anything is true if you try hard enough.

I was making an observation about a very specific aspect of the wal-mart experience, that's all. I made no mention of my opinion on the quality of Wal-Mart overall.

when they had greeters here in LC, I use to shake hands and actually talk to them . Enjoyed meeting them. Have respect for them, because they want to EARN A LIVING

Walmart has actually shifted from the traditional greeter to Asset Protection associates trained in preventing theft. But they will still stick someone at a door that is physically incapable of doing anything else. Walmart likes to hire handicapped people like the deaf, paralyzed, elderly, and mentally impaired for the tax breaks.
