I knew an old gentleman that was a retired Navy Chief, and had a second retirement from USDA who was a Walmart greeter for several years. He didn't do it for the money, he was independently wealthy. After his second retirement, he and his wife traveled the world for several years. He had a fishing and hunting camp in Stephansville that he spent a lot of time at. He did it because it got him out of the house and he enjoyed meeting and talking to people.

There is a Wal-Mart greeter in New Orleans East on Bullard, named Fransico, that is one of the nicest people I have ever met. The guy does such a great job at welcoming people and pointing them in the right direction. He's full of energy, fist bumps every single person coming in and leaving and makes sure to tell every single person hello and to have a nice day.
I saw him walk a lady to her car in the rain one day. Pretty amazing how he goes above and behind what Wal-Mart probably expects and pays him for.
Obviously he may be the exception, because I haven't visited that many Wal-marts, but he's proof they're not all useless.

I feel like you described the physical capabilities of just about all Wal Mart workers

For every lazy Walmart associate, there's another one that has to work their arse off to make up for the work that they don't do.

I thought Walmart got rid of greeters years ago.

Subtle post to pretend you never go to Walmart.

My dad is in his early sixties, successful career, and plans on retiring in 2 years. He is absolutely adamant on becoming a costco greeter about 3 days a week (if they let him) when this happens. He figures it will pay for utilities and food and keep him busy while allowing him to use ss and retirement for health, leisure and travel.

Does she really get paid more than she'd get in welfare?

Having a job instead of relying on welfare is actually valued by people who have some pride left in themselves. And some older people are lonely and enjoy being around others and speaking to folks.

For decades, I know Wal-Mart has used that as a position to help people translating back from workman's comp claims to their regular labor force.

Say you get an injury on the job that requires you to be out for a month, then on light duty for 8 weeks-- its a viable light labor job they can have you do, so you are able to get back in the swing of working.

Why don't old people and the handicapped just stay in their homes until they die. No one wants to see that.

How would you hook up with anyone and get laid ever if they didn't go out into the community?

Walmart has actually shifted from the traditional greeter to Asset Protection associates trained in preventing theft.
This is it where I live. One is a big, fat man, and the other side is an annoying woman prob mid 40's. When they ask to see my receipt, I say "Nope, Don't have to."

Walmart likes to hire handicapped people like the deaf, paralyzed, elderly, and mentally impaired for the tax breaks.
There was a blind greeter at the one I went in this morning, fwiw.
