Let's Discuss Soviet Submarines

Just watched an interesting YouTube doc on the Soviet Alfa & Typhoon class subs...I always wondered why the US never attempted to match the speed and depth capabilities of the Alfa. This doc answered those questions. And even though I grew up as a kid in the end of the Cold War, I still appreciate the lines on the Alfa. Sporty little minx.

Because titanium isn’t widely available, it’s a bitch to work with, etc.
We needed titanium to make the SR-71 and its variants work and we had to back door the purchases from the Soviet Union through multiple fake companies to make it happen.

as a former USN Sonar Tech, then an ASWO, the US will NEVER compare to India/China/Russia when it comes to Submarines...
ETA: The downvotes are pretty funny considering id be the only one on this board who literally went to school on the subject

The USA attempted to match the depths of the Alpha with USS SEAWOLF. But the new steel (HY100) was spectacularly more expensive than the HY80 found on LA and VA classes. It’s one of the reasons why only 3 were made

Yep. Plus being able to go THAT deep doesn’t offer that much of a tactical advantage.

my dad was a sub commander in the 70-80s. wild times for sure. riding around with a boat full of nukes
