When I was on a Sub, and we were approached by a Russian Trawler, we would shoot out an underwater device that mimicked the sound of our screw, then go in the opposite direction. The design of our screw was classified, designed for quietness.

It's amazing to me how many issues the Soviets apparently "fixed with tape" when the solution was much more complex. All in the name of saving face.
In the YT doc I posted, the USSR tried using liquid metal to cool reactors and found out why the US dropped the technology...one of the Soviet ships had a shutdown and the lines with the coolant dropped below 125 Celsius, and the liquid metal hardened in the lines. Essentially "bricking" the ship. Really, guys? Y'all didn't consider that small detail?

Russian submarines aren't really known for their quality control. Sure they're fast, sure they run deep, but they also encounter a lot of problems that tend to put entire crews in danger. The United States has better and safer submarines.

it's a reflection of Russian - specifically Soviet - culture. it was all about propaganda, appearances, saving face, etc. human lives were far down the list of priorities, if they were even on the list at all.
