Sold one for 5k in the same condition. Best car I ever owned. Ugly as sin. Not my first choice, but never had a problem.

I'd probably own a classic mini cooper as my second choice.

I bought it to drive to work. But 20 bucks to fill it up sure is nice.. damn near 80 to fill my trucks tank. I wouldn't drive it on a long trip because it's about as sturdy as a beer can but around town and 15 miles to work where I don't get above 45 is cool with me..

Wife drove one for a number of years, then I took over when we got her an upgrade. It was a nifty little car. Lots of storage when you folded down the seats, zero maintenance issues all the way up to about 160k, and would easily hit 33-35 mpg highway. They offered it in AWD but I can't speak to those. I totalled it and insurance gave me 3 grand when I thought it wa worth $500.

Honda Civic. I love mine for the daily commute with 37 mpg. Oh, I just noticed we are talking used. You can get a new Civic under $20k.

You should see the looks I get when I show up to a wade fishin spot in my car.. I lay the seat down and put a tarp in the back. Waders cooler poles net etc.. during the flounder run I'll fish just about everyday and it's a 45 mile ride to the spot I fish..

2007 Toyota Landcruiser/Lexus LX470 - Last year of the 100 series. Get one with around 130K on it for around $15-18k...drive it for the next 10 years. As long as you take care of it, it will never die and you won't have any trouble selling it for a reasonable price.
