I could imagine Sarah McLachlan singing in the background for the entire segment.

quote:

She told the BBC: "These are young women with strength and confidence, who are being specifically targeted by the state's deliberate campaign to pressure [them] into marrying. Chinese women today are more educated than ever before and they are increasingly resisting marriage."

They called their own daughter ugly to her face.

Dayum

quote:

'She's not too pretty, that's why she's leftover' - The heartbreaking exchange between this woman and her mother

Isn't there a shortage of women in China due to the one child policy...and they still can't find someone to take them?

Sheesh. That's like being an uneaten cake at a tumblr convention.

Harsh, definitely. You can see as China modernizes they have similar changes in their society that we did.

ETA:

Japan has issues with men not wanting to have sex and procreate iirc correctly. I'd like to see how that turns out.

That Marriage Market is pretty fricked up TBH.

quote:

Ending on a positive note, the advert sees the single women and their parents visiting a "marriage market". These "markets" are usually a place for parents to leave posters listing the details of their unmarried children, in the hopes of finding a match.

then there's this.

quote:

But can the single women of China see real happy endings - where society will truly accept their choices?

This is common in most of Asia, especially India. Feminists in the US have no idea how good they have it here.

Yes, but that doesn't undue the damage done up until then.

Her first problem is that she's complaining to the BBC about her problems. If I know one thing about the BBC, it's that it doesn't care about your marriage issues. In fact, the BBC is the reason for a lot of marriage issues.

I'm pretty sure they know they have it better here than in a lot of places. That doesn't mean they should stop advocating for themselves.

This is what happens to Chinese women when they watch too much "Sex and the City". Next thing they'll pack their shite and move to NYC to live a 'single and fabulous' life.

VICE had a great segment on this. The marriage market is insane.

Its like a flea market with parents standing there holding pictures and resumes of their daughters trying to market them to men walking around looking for a wife.

The little squirrely VICE guy couldn’t get any of the parents to accept him as a husband for their daughter

Lots of groups fail to realize this, thus the constant bitching.

I feel sorry for her. I would offer these words of encouragement and guidance.

"Honey, there are a lot of women out there more pretty than you but just remember this: Eager Beats Pretty. When it comes to getting men to spend time with you, Eager Beats Pretty.
