While the average box fan has an induction motor that has no brushes and is likely not to spark the switch gear may. Most don't have any metal in the fan anymore so that is fairly safe too. In the end, it is marginally safe but it is completely possible to produce a spark with them.
Good point

I did this after I had covid. I walked by the stove and heard the gas. I had no idea how long it had been on and couldn't smell a thing. Grabbed the cat, went outside, and called someone to come smell my house.

Do you have a CO monitor in your house?
A shitty one powered by a D battery. Ran out of juice the other day, didn’t have batteries to replace it with. Don’t know if landlord should be responsible for that type of maintenance or I am. Probably should’ve just nutted up and went to the store lol

Good thing is natural gas has a specific gravity of about 0.6 to air so it’s going to float to the ceiling or upstairs. Turn off the gas, open the windows and doors and allow the house to ventilate until the smell is gone.
This is a totally different story if you have propane for your stove. Propane is heavier than air and will stay on the floor. Propane could be a more dangerous situation.

You ever see a light switch arc when you flip it?

Not as easy as you think to get the right air to gas mixture to blow up. Venting the house for a bit will be just fine

Need to have it checked out.
For gas to blow, you need a lot of pressure, but nobody wants to reach those limits.
