Another way to look at it is that the guy/girl going 90 shouldn't be going 90 in the first place. Why do we always conveniently gloss over that little tidbit in these debates?

Because Louisiana. A bunch of people who can't drive for shite but drive 20mph over the limit, bitching about people driving the speed limit. Do any of you realize how easily you can fricking kill someone driving like an a-hole?

Let's completely gloss over that the Germans seem to do it without issue while we suck at it.

Maybe so, but this is not Germany.

I think cops should enforce driving in the left lane more than they do. If no one is being punished for driving in the left lane, then nothing is going to push people out of that lane.

This.

So you should cut him off and cause a wreck?

BTW, I'm someone that drives the speed limit, but before I get into the left lane I check to see if anyone is coming. If I'm going to slow someone down by getting over then I don't get over.

And if you are going 70 to pass someone going 60 and a car going 90 is already on your arse then you should not have gotten in the left lane in the first place. Or did you not look to see if someone driving faster was coming up in the left lane, effectively cutting them Spot on.

Yeah, let's cater to the guy committing an arrestable offense...

90 in a 70 is hardly an arrestable offense. Chances are low since, believe it or not, 85-90 mph is not that fast in some areas and can be quite common in the faster traffic moving in packs. Once you cross into triple digits is when your chances of being arrested increase significantly.

Not at all. I don't believe in placing myself in harm's way to prove a point.

That's not what usually happens though. What usually happens is you are already in the left lane trying to execute a pass around a slower moving vehicle, and some dickhead feels like it's his right to be going 90-100 in the left lane. He comes up on you and is about 3 feet from your bumper all freaking out and flailing arms and shite. That's what I was talking about.

It's a passing lane. It's not the redneck autobahn lane.

We do suck at driving. The problem is that we mostly view driving as a chore and demand every creature comfort and driving aid available (i.e. blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, lane departure warning, messaging seats, multiple big-gulp cup holders etc.) to numb us from the driving experience. In other words, we'd rather set the cruise at 5 over and tune out everything around us.

The Germans, on the other hand, have a passion for driving instilled into their culture. While some of the same driving aids are available to them, you won't find things like cup holders or drivers-side make-up mirrors in their sports cars because driving is about driving and only driving. Driving 90 mph in the left lane in the unrestricted areas of the Autobahn would likely get you ran over and actually ticketed for reckless driving for impeding traffic!

If a person drives 90 in a 70, then it's their own responsibility to know that most cars will be greatly surprised by their speedy approach. In other words, the 90 mph driver should be well aware that they are going to spend most of their trips slowing down and re-accelerating, and slowing back down, and re-accelerating. The reason? Because they are driving in a fashion much different than most drivers on the road.

If I tried to run at full speed through a busy New York City crosswalk, don't you think I'd encounter some issues there? Would it be everybody else's fault that people are getting knocked down?

God bless you. I'm a fast driver but not aggressive or dickish, but I swear to you that 90% of the passive aggressive mofos who decide to pass at the speed limit look back and make sure they pull out in front of me in the left lane to slow me down

Yep. Especially tractor trailer drivers. They love to create Mexican roadblocks for miles and miles.

Easiest way to find an a-hole in a social situation is the person who hysterically flies off the handle when the subject of "slow people in the left lane" comes up. Fact.

Good point. The easiest way to find the person who completely lacks self-awareness is when you talk to that guy who has no idea what 'slower traffic keep right' means.

This doesn't happen unless you aren't paying attention to what's coming up behind you.

He wouldn't be 3ft from your bumper had you been looking in your mirrors and noticed him coming before getting over. And how hard is it to step it up 1-2mph to pass someone? You're passing them anyway, right?

I'd trust someone going 90 is going to cause less accidents than someone randomly breaking for no one reason in the left lane or someone driving below the speed limit in the passing lane on a major interstate.

Too many times I've sat in traffic for 45 mins to hour an longer than normal, only to all of a sudden just start flowing normally. People drive too defensively and it causes entirely too much traffic and in turn, accidents.

I wish people would pass me on the left. Most people come flying up on me (in the right-hand lane) then latch on for miles and miles.

Heaven forbid that the road funnels down to one lane in each direction. That's when they get REALLY mad and get even closer.

I always wonder... why didn't they pass me when they could?

Since when is following the rules of the road considered owning the road? I can't believe that no one has called you out for being a dickhead.

Note: this wasn't your only dickheadish post in this thread.
