Great read, and truly represents the best and worst about the civil war.

I believe the Louisiana Tigers they spoke 18 different languages, and unlike many other regiments, corps, and brigades within the Army of Nothernern Virginia. The Louisiana Tigers came from all walks of life you had criminals recently released from jail fighting alongside politicians, doctors, and lawyers. Also Louisiana and the Tigers at the time had a different society for free men of color, creoles, and mulattoes. Within the Army of Northern Virginia they were hated because they had half black troops. They fought for honor and their state because many just liked a good fight

quote:

holding the line at Second Manassas by throwing rocks when they ran out of ammunition

Soldier in the Union army said at Manassas they were the meanest and fiercest group of soldiers he had ever seen from any state. To throw rocks in hand to hand combat against men with guns. Also for history buffs the only time at Gettysburg the south took the high ground was because the LA Tigers took Cemetery Hill and then only retreated because they had no direction.

My favorite story, was Lee was watching a battle unfold and one of his subordinates maybe Hill saw the LA Tigers leading the charge and took the field and he yelled out in front of Lee something like "Damn Tigers let them steal whatever they want, they have won the day." Lee looked at him like he was crazy

I took history from him at NLU. He told some great stories about early American History.

The best history professor I ever had. He was so easy to follow and extremely knowledgeable. I took at least 5 classes under him

That was actually Gen Jubal Early who said that. The Tigers were serving under him at that time

...dude... That is so fake it's unbelievable. There was one Louisiana unit that was mixed race. It wasnt in the Tigers, it never left New Orleans, and it never saw combat. In fact about 10% of the unit switched sides to the Union. The rest returned to civilian life after N.O. was captured by Farragut/ Butler.

People do not understand that the definition of “Creole” has changed over time. In the 1860’s it absolutely did not mean of mixed race (black/white). Gen Beauregard was a Creole and did not have any black blood in him. It referred to the “Aristocracy” or “Society” of New Orleans which was originally French or Spanish with possibly a mix between them.

Today the term “Creole” usually means a black/white mix.

That is where some of the confusion lies when reading about the 1860’s era history

Yes. Plenty of white Creole units in the Tigers. Zero mulatto or black units.
