Tyler is very nice. Rose capital of USA. Nice people, hard working. But nothing much to do.

We recently moved from Cov to Katy, if suburbia is you jam it is good. I hate suburbia, I would rather live around the Tyler area. As much as I want to be back around family seeing the cluster frick that is LA from afar definitely has me considering TX for the long-term.

What do you like to do where you live? Just wondering how sad I should be here in the Tyler area.

I left Louisiana in 2020 and moved to Tyler area for a promotion as well. I chose Bullard for school system and quick Tyler Access. From my house, South tyler is 8 minutes away straight up 69.
I'm not sure what you're looking for in a location, but personally I would stick around Tyler for proximity to things. Whitehouse, Lindale, Bullard, Flint. If schools and/or quick access to Tyler aren't a concern for you then I'd open myself up to other areas.
There isn't much going on in Athen, Gladewater, Kilgore or Big Sandy. Jacksonville is a nice small community, with a few decent food options, but any real "activities" would still require a 25 minute trip to Tyler.
Yes, Texas is worlds apart from Louisiana. Roads, parks, recreation, income opportunities, public schools, etc. Overall just a better quality of life.
Property taxes suck, but the lack of state income tax helps offset that.
Happy to answer any other specific questions.

Also, yes, Smith is a "moist" county. You can purchase beer and wine, but spirits are only available at restaurants/bars, you cannot purchase spirit bottles in Smith. All surrounding counties have liquor stores on the highways at the county line though. These are only a few minutes outside of town in any direction you go.
Coming from LA, this was a culture shock.
Also, if it matters to you (didn't to me), Catholics are by far a minority in this area. However, there are a wild amount of all denominations of churches scattered around. There are over 150 churches in Tyler alone. LINK /

And for those that have left and moved to Texas, has your life significantly improved?
Yes. I miss my people back home, but not worth living there. Texas has definitely been good to me.

Life improved after the move. Sure they missed some aspects of life in state, but every single one of them said it was an improvement. And all say they didn’t realize how backwards La. is till they left and had a real comparison.
This is what NOBODY who hasnt left the state will understand. They will just get butt hurt and say glad you moved we didnt want you anyways. its hilarious

No to Jacksonville, Athens. Bullard or on Lake Palestine. Tyler is a great place to raise a family, been here 24 years. Lots of LSU alum here and active alumni group. Crawfish boil coming up at True Vine brewery

This is 100% fact. And it’s not just about Texas. It’s anywhere outside the state of La, except maybe Mississippi. Quality of life is so much better and life becomes a lot smoother in many aspects when things are done the correct way.
