What are the laws around physically intervening to stop a crime? You see someone steal a wallet or purse, can you cold clock them or body slam them without catching a charge?

I would certainly think so. If not, that's just stupid.

Don’t worry about the laws. Worry about the DA.

Be more worried about the lawsuit for personal injury from whatever thug you intervene on. Guarantee you he’s going to sue if you get physical with him.

You would think but a lot of people get charged for defending themselves much less another person or their property.

Any protection from civil charges?

No. The issue is not whether or not you will prevail at trial. It’s the cost of defense. So you lose even if you win.

More often than not force can be used when a forcible felony is committed.
If someone mugs a woman and takes her purse you would be well within reasonable rights to forcibly stop them than if you witnessed them snatching a purse that was unattended.

unless you were to kill or seriously injure an unarmed person of the protected class, being prosecuted and incarcerated very unlikely. HOWEVER, it will be the most expensive purse/wallet, whatever..you ever paid for.
