LSU for free is best bet by far. Dallas and Houston routinely recruit at LSU.

I go to Tulane Law
IF you really scored a 167 and have a 3.5 dont settle for Tulane at 23k for tuition, you are easily in their top 10% for LSAT you can get more from them if you like the school
You definitely have an outside shot at UT. Work hard on this app; if you get wait listed periodically write LOCI's to them
No one should consider Loyola that has a 167(no disrespect)
When i applied i would look at LawSchoolNumber.com it is a good way to visualize your chances. I had a terrible GPA(under 3.0) and a 162 on the LSAT so i thought Loyola was my cap. I ended up getting into. UofH, LSU, Tulane, Maryland(WLd at a couple 'better' schools)
With applications down you have a good shot at snagging a reach. If I were you I would apply all over the top 14-30 and every free app i got. Remember to you can leverage some of these schools against each other if you get a better offer from a comparable school.
I always tell my friends applying to look at LawSchoolTransparency.com they are good at being real with numbers. Law schools are selling fools gold to most kids
GL brah and congrats on the 167

So I've got a 3.92 GPA and a 169 LSAT. 4 years in the Marine Corps with extensive combat experience in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Only problem is prior to joining the Marine Corps I got suspended from my first undergraduate institution. Anyone have any idea how this will impact me? I got suspended for a marijuana paraphernalia ticket and consuming cocaine (No criminal charges for the coke). Am I screwed?

As long as you fill out your application truthfully, you should BR fine. This is especially true for the bar application.

So any advice for someone graduating with a biological engineering bachelors degree looking at a possible patent law route?
I don't know if it is worth it to go to law school for 3 years only to find out you don't like practicing patent law. Patent law takes a special type of person. There are better jobs out there with your biological engineering degree.
This is coming from someone with a biology degree and currently in law school.

Get your law degree with as little debt as possible. I think it helps to go to law school in the same state where you'll likely practice.

I do a lot of patent litigation. For patent prosecutors, undergrad degree and grades are almost as important as law school. If you want to do prosecution, that practice has about as good a balance of good pay and quality of life as I've seen. But it is becoming more commoditized, and the few jobs are extremely competitive.

To the OP:
It depends on where you want to practice. If you are looking to practice in Houston or Dallas, which are the two big markets in the region, then go to UH or SMU. However, if you don't know where you want to practice but want to keep options open, LSU is sending more and more students to texas each year. Rank in the top 10% and you have a good chance of landing a job in houston or dallas.

Criminal litigation FTW
Public defender > private solo practice

Not at all.
Be honest on your character and fitness , that's all.
Tulare admitted a guy who was convicted of murder.

Definitely disclose it, but you should be able to write it off as youthful indiscretions, the military made you mature, etc..
But definitely disclose it on your applications to law schools and your application to the bar.

If youre getting a full scholarship to LSU and you dont know if you want to stay in state or not then go there.
If you have a full scholarship to Loyola, you want to live and work in new orleans then go there.
If you want to practice out of state then go to Tulane.

Yea, they eat this shite up. If you play your cards right, this can actually be a positive.

In Michigan, you can have the worst rap sheet ever and get through character and fitness. They just don't want a liar.
As for the patent law thing, all I can say is of all my friends/acquaintances from law school, there is only one whose job I sort of envy. He is a patent guy and rakes it in without much stress. He pretty much just grinds patent applications. The patent litigation can get nasty and time consuming if you go that route.
