So Laura is sliding back east?
Posted on 8/23/20 at 5:30 pm to slackster
Ughh!!! Way too many tracks on the SE La. side. The uncertainty continues.

That cone for Laura starting to look potentially pretty bad for SWLA.

Is there a place to find local wind speeds from past storms? I remember Andrew as a kid in Houma it do t remember wind speed. Anybody know what wind speeds were in Houma proper?

Sure are some conservative estimates on the intensity forecasts in the majority of those ensembles...

Trying to find wind speeds in Houma for Andrew I found this:
173 and 153 wow

Aug. 26, 1992: Andrew slammed into south Florida as a major hurricane Aug. 24 before hitting south Louisiana two days later. A drilling barge on Bayou Teche in St. Mary Parish recorded gusts of 173 mph, and 153 mph winds were reported in New Iberia. A tornado in LaPlace killed two people. The storm caused the evacuation of nearly 1.5 million people. Damage in Louisiana: $1 billion.

So really won’t have a clue until she is finally out on water after hitting Cuba?
We have a pretty decent clue. Everything from New Orleans eastward seems unlikely. Everything from Galveston southwestward seems unlikely.
The big steering factors are how strong is she and how far south/west does she track across Cuba.

Those are probably juiced a bit (unverified gusts) but Andrew was a formidable beast for a small swath of St Mary and Iberia parishes.

NHC does post analysis but they only use select cities/sites for verified wind reports.
Take Lili for example. If you rode it out anywhere outside of Intercoastal City, you’re unlikely to have experienced sustained hurricane force winds. Gusts, sure, but not sustained winds. Neither Delcambre nor Kaplan measured sustained hurricane force winds for Lili.
Most people around here understand surge and rain are your biggest real threats, and that’s typically because the strong winds are so incredibly isolated.

These storms ain’t gonna do anything big outside of the coast cities. Feel bad for them though.

I can’t stand his attitude. What about people that have to go to work tomorrow? It’s not a CAT5 making landfall at daylight tomorrow. We will have some leeway during the day.
