But right wingers suggest that our energy sector is completely controlled by the White House
I’m not suggesting that, the White House is suggesting that. From their own Twitter account back in December:

New: The average price of gas is down nearly 10 cents per gallon since last month's peak and prices continue to fall.
Read more about our progress at the pump and @POTUS's ongoing work to bring down prices here:

Looks like this thread has been completely given over to domestic discussions. I guess that pesky little war in Ukraine is done?

It's turning into the PT.

Is that where the upward trend started though? Looks like a damn near 40% increase in trump's last 9 months in office. Much like every other commodity.
I'm not defending it, I'm just saying that graphs meant to sway opinion are more effective if there aren't glaring falsehoods included.
I don't know enough about O&G to even ask a dumb question about the price of gas.
Now I'm at fault for adding to the derailment of this thread. Let's try to get back on topic and keep it to what's going on between Russia and Ukraine primarily.

it is so incredibly stupid for a white house to attach itself to the price of gas

I'm usually one to bitch about politics derailing everything but this topic is part of the calculus. Russia is betting it's population can withstand economic pain longer than the west's can. They may be right.

We can walk and chew bubblegum at the same time, dude. The war is affecting the gas prices, so they are related.

Yanukovych addresses Zelensky, urges him to stop fighting.
Ex-President Viktor Yanukovych, who lives in Russia since being ousted in 2014, asks Zelensky to “overcome his pride” and stop the war at any cost.
Yanukovych’s letter to Zelensky was published by the Russian media.

At any cost meaning comply with Russian demands.
If Russia was winning decisively they wouldn't be making these pleas, disengenuous or otherwise.

And a CBC article talking about him:

One of the world’s best snipers has arrived in Ukraine.
The French-Canadian “Wali” from the Royal Canadian 22e Régiment made his reputation during tours in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq
He fought in the same Canadian unit as the sniper with the world’s longest kill (3.5 km)

CBC
quote:
Under a foreign flag: Canadian veterans explain why they're fighting for Ukraine

In Afghanistan, he was nicknamed Wali.
And the name stuck for the former sniper with the Royal 22e Regiment, who — earlier this week, in the dead of night — crossed the border into Ukraine from Poland, answering a call from Ukraine's president for a foreign legion to help repel the Russian invasion.
quote:
The sight of people whose lives have been ripped apart by war touches everyone but it digs a little deeper for soldiers and veterans, who witness such scenes with more painful regularity.
"I want to help them. It's as simple as that," said Wali, who also did a stint as a foreign fighter with the Kurdish forces which battled Islamic State extremists in northern Iraq several years ago.
"I have to help because there are people here being bombarded just because they want to be European and not Russian."

Exclusive: the United Nations has banned its staff from using the words "war" or "invasion" to refer to the situation in Ukraine, the Irish Times has learned
UN is concerned about their reputation apparently.
