Has anyone been able to determine what the "Z" stands for? I always assumed it was meant to be threatening to Zelensky.
It is the letter that this war is brought to you by. It is a subtle nod to Sesame Street.

No way this EO and the precedent it sets has a future impact on crypto for everyone, right? Nah....of course it won't!
Countries were always going to get around to regulating crypto. It's crazy to think they'll let their various currencies be undercut.

According to Catriona Kelly, honorary professor of Russian and Soviet culture at the University of Cambridge, Z is widely used as a tank and military vehicle identifier by Russian forces at war in Ukraine. She tells Fortune that the letter V is also widely used on the tanks.
The Russian Defense Ministry issued a statement on March 3, noting that Z stood for Za pobedu, or “For victory,” while V stood for Sila v pravde, or “Our strength is in truth.”
But the usage of more than one letter has left some believing the letter signifies the end location or mission of the vehicle. Former Marine Capt. Rob Lee, who spent a year with a defense-focused think tank in Moscow and is now a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of War Studies at King’s College London, notes the Z symbol is “different from what you normally see on Russian vehicles.”
“They’re obviously something new. And the most likely reason they would have put these kinds of symbols on is to indicate a different task force, a different echelon,” he told Task & Purpose.
According to the journal, there are unconfirmed rumors circulating on Russian social media that Russian vehicles with emblazoned Z’s are intended to advance toward the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, while other letters signify they might be headed elsewhere.

Reuters
There's a good bit more to that article.

For foreign fighters, Ukraine offers purpose, camaraderie and a cause
quote:
LVIV, Ukraine, March 7 (Reuters) - Michael Ferkol, who once served as a supply specialist with engineer battalions in the U.S. Army, had been in Rome studying archaeology when he heard the Ukrainian president's appeal for foreign fighters.
Within days, Ferkol said, he presented himself at a military recruiting office in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, hoping to be taken on as a frontline paramedic.
"I told them I wanted to triage patients," said the 29-year- old, who has no combat experience. "There was a Finnish guy there too, and he was like, 'I just want to kill Russians.'"
quote:
Ukraine has established an "international" legion for people from abroad and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has publicly urged foreigners to "fight side-by-side with Ukrainians against the Russian war criminals" to show support for his country. Last week, Zelenskiy said that more than 16,000 foreigners had volunteered, without specifying how many had arrived.
quote:
And alongside battle-hardened veterans of war, people are arriving with little or no combat experience, offering limited value in a war zone under constant, terrifying shelling by the Russian military. One man who identified himself as British military veteran referred to these recruits as "bullet-catchers."
quote:
Among those who have arrived to fight for Ukraine are dozens of former soldiers from the British Army's elite Parachute Regiment, according to an ex-soldier from the regiment. Hundreds more would soon follow, he said. Reuters was unable to corroborate those numbers.
Often referred to as the Paras, the regiment has in recent years served in Afghanistan and Iraq. "They're all highly, highly trained, and have seen active service on numerous occasions," the ex-soldier from the regiment said. The Ukraine crisis will give them purpose, camaraderie and "a chance to do what they're good at: fight."
quote:
For some, travelling to Ukraine, even from far-away countries, was the easy part. Those who hadn't brought body armour, helmets and other equipment with them were struggling to source them in Ukraine, according to several fighters Reuters spoke to.
Some veterans were sharing information on equipment and logistics through invite-only Facebook or WhatsApp groups with names like "Have Gun Will Travel." These groups contain appeals for equipment, such as body armour and night-vision goggles, or for foreign veterans who are snipers or who can train Ukrainian soldiers in how to use sophisticated weapons that Western countries are sending.

That's the third general officer killed along with about a dozen Colonels and LTCs. I've read speculation that senior officers are trying to get the advance moving by leading from the front.

This has a lot of potential for spiraling out of control.

That’s what I was thinking. There was post a few days ago about the only units that were making any progress were the ones with motivated officers.

The the general killed last week was confirmed (or as confirmed as you can get) to have been killed by a sniper while working to get a stalled column moving. He was the first one killed.

I’m sure most of the volunteers will just turn into cannon fodder, but elite British soldiers with combat experience versus a bunch of Russian conscripts straight out of boot camp is not a good matchup. The Brits are going to absolutely slaughter those Russian troops.

Even if Russia comes out victorious, the beating they have taken in Ukraine (thousands of dead soldiers, a ton of high ranking officers killed, countless lost equipment) will make their shitty military even worse for a while. If they didn’t have nukes they would probably get their arse handed to them by damn near any western nation.

I think one of the better uses of volunteers with actual experience will come in the way of training Ukrainians to use the weapons and equipment sent to them. They'll have more value in that than on the front lines, at least at this point.

I'm interested to see how these volunteers are classified on the battlefield. It's not like volunteers fighting for the Kurds against ISIS. This is foreigners fighting under one country against another country.

Damn reading that thread is a new level of ineptitude for Russia

I had to add this bit from that article about the volunteers:
"Bert and Michal go to War" coming to theaters in the Fall of 2022!

On Friday, when Reuters visited, six foreigners appeared at Shepelyak's office, including a Polish military veteran called Michal, and a giant, heavily-tattooed Dutchman called Bert.

Regarding this, I did a quick search and came up with this article. It has alot of external links in it, but I haven't looked into those yet. It raises some of those concerns and may address them within the links.
War on the Rocks
ETA: It specifically warns against Ukraine allowing them to form independent or freelance militias, basically saying volunteers need to be kept within the established military structure Ukraine uses now. I'd assume, for what it is worth, that they would be governed by the same laws/code as the regular military.
