Speaking of which, if Ukraine was preparing for this so well, then would the channels be mined?

Russia is the kinda-big guy that can take 2/3 of the occupants one on one, wouldn't stand a chance against us. But is the guy who is holding a bomb with a suicide switch. If we fight, the switch goes off and everyone in the room dies. So, we leave each other alone, but talk shite to each other.

That's what nuclear deterrence is; if someone with an arsenal gets stomped, they can end civilization unilaterally.

Assuming the naval convoy isn’t as slow as the truck convoy, it could be a few hours away. I assume daybreak is preferable for a landing.

Marine equipment breaks down at a higher rate than does terrestrial equipment.

I would assume that they’ll be a welcoming committee awaiting the Ruskies as they liberate their fellow countrymen.

Odessa is well defended. Russia has already at least probed the area. They may have already attempted a landing that was repelled and/or it was called off. There were mixed reports about that yesterday.

Yeah, a landing will be a gruesome scene one way or the other.

Total war reported fatalities from both sides will probably double before the battle is over.

Speaking of how well Odessa may or may not be defended. I think the Ukrainians may have accidentally taken a shot at a Turkish ship that was coming into that port for some reason. There was a Turkish ship off the coast there yesterday that was smoking heavily.

I say "may" because no one seems to know anything outside of the smoking ship being there and that it belonged to Turkey.

I am wondering if Odessa falls (which is probably likely depending on how much Russia is willing to throw at it) if Zelensky will officially call an end to conscription of civilian men and order a mass evacuation of the country.

The UN is reporting that total refugees are 1 million and climbing. While I support a continual fight from the Ukrainian military and any civilian who wants to stay, those 1 million refugees are going to want their brothers, fathers, and sons back.

Edit: If there is to be a Ukrainian diaspora, it does no Ukrainian mother with children any good to be a widow.

Not wanting to retreat from evil, but Odessa might be the last stand. Either Russia throws everything they have at it, and we know that Russia will not stop. Or the bloodshed will be too much for Moscow and Putin acquiesces to a pullout.

An interesting Twitter thread on the issues Russian equipment may be facing and what is causing alot of the abandoned vehicles we've seen. You military buffs would probably appreciate this one:

This is a thread that will explain the implied poor Russian Army truck maintenance practices based on this photo of a Pantsir-S1 wheeled gun-missile system's right rear pair of tires below & the operational implications during the Ukrainian mud season.

That clown is trying to say the Russians are staying on the roads because they have bad tires.

No, it's because off road is a mud pit.

Southerners probably don't know this, but when the frost goes out of the ground it is very soft. Much moreso than after a rainstorm. The frost may be a couple feet into the ground so when it thaws that's about how deep the mud is when you drive anything with some weight to it onto it.

They even have a name for it in Russia; Rasputitsa

Both sides probably went into this very unprepared. By default, 90% of people involved in historic events go into them more concerned about some stupid job interview or chronic hemorrhoid or whatever.

So I got bored and looked on the Windy app to see what the weather was like at Odessa

     [/img]

Cloud bases at about 350 ft
Visibility at 7.5 Km or about 4.5 miles in real measurements.

So no one will be getting any air cover

Side note, but Maajid Nawaz was on TimCastIRL tonight. Super smart guy and one of the few who actually knows what’s really going on: YouTube

Apparently Maajid destroys Tim in the last 30 minutes, so probably entertaining.
