I read earlier that there were reports that Russian soldiers were calling back home and their parents were shocked and had no clue they were in the Ukraine.

China so far does not appear to be helping Russia evade Western financial sanctions on Moscow, but doing so would "do profound damage" to China's reputation, a U.S. official said. "The latest signs suggest that China's not coming to the rescue"

[SkyNews] At least 64 civiliains killed in Ukraine, according to UN
quote:
At least 240 civilians have been wounded and 64 killed in Ukraine, the United Nations has confirmed.
It said it believed the "real figures are considerably higher" because many reports of casualties remain to be confirmed.

Can China even afford to prop up Russia right now?
Their economy isn't exactly doing great and they have a MASSIVE debt crisis brewing.

But we know Russia has more up to date tech and tanks and shite like that. They are using a lot of cold war era equipment even though we know they have much more modern stuff. Many of the soldiers that have been captured look like a bunch of out of shape simpletons they pulled off the couch a couple weeks ago. ETA: I never expected Russia to come in and defeat ukraine in a week, but I also didn't expect them to appear to be complete amateurs using decades old tech
I hope it’s Ukraine holding their own but my gut says it’s Putin being crafty.
My suspicion is two fold.
Putin wants Ukraine for economic and strategic reasons as a launching spot for broader stuff moving forward. He doesn’t want to have to worry about building back up a razed to the ground Ukraine+doesn’t want to deal with a massive motivated home resistance in Ukraine by going all out general Sherman style.
Second by being slow hes allowing some nato country or border country time to build up the courage to score some virtue points by aiding the Ukrainians when it looks like the tide is turning or at least a stale mate. Once they do it allows him to justify broadening the scope. IE Germany biding a little time before actually giving some weapons etc.

Russia is doing the same thing.
Their propaganda is saying that Ukrainians are surrendering to the Russians. The Russians are then giving them food, water, and putting them on nice charter buses.
While Ukrainian Soldiers fighting are using civilians as human shields.

This tracks with the ongoing ramp up in the attack on Kyiv. Looks like we are at the start of a legitimate push to take Kyiv almost "at all costs". Curious decision by Putin if true.
It's too late. The world is united against him, nobody will recognize his puppet, and Ukraine will continue to fight with plenty of outside support. That's why I was calling this invasion a failure two days ago.
From a military perspective, sure, be deliberate, wear down an inferior opponent, take Ukraine at your leisure (although it's looking like Russia is incapable even of that).
From a geopolitical perspective, Putin had to at minimum decapitate Ukraine's command structure and establish a token presence of a puppet regime in the capital within 24-48 hours. Maybe an impossible task, but that's what he had to do. Europe would express outrage, impose sanctions, but it's a done deal and how are they going to reverse it. The Baltics, Scandinavia and Poland are intimidated. NATO is split, and he's the big swinging dick in Eurasia. Instead his military is struggling, everybody's talking about his health, he's almost certainly going to have two new NATO members on his borders, and his own puppets are telling him to frick off.
Regardless of how the battle of Kyiv turns out, he's already lost, and lost badly. It may be an existential loss, with a bullet in the head before whatever illness he has finishes him.

It was never going to be easy for Russia, and we are only 3 days in.

[CNN] Defenders of Ukrainian island may still be alive and now POWs, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine says
quote:
The defenders of the small Ukrainian island of Zmiinyi in the Black Sea may still be alive, according to a statement released on Saturday by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGSU).
"We [have a] strong belief that all Ukrainian defenders of Zmiinyi (Snake) Island may be alive,” the statement said.
Both President Zelensky and the SBGSU said Friday all the soldiers had been killed following the small island’s capture by Russian forces.
Preliminary information that border guards may be dead came before the defenders lost contact," Saturday's statement said.
On Friday, Russian Major-General Igor Konashenkov said 82 Ukrainian servicemen “laid down their arms and voluntarily surrendered to a unit of the Russian Armed Forces.”
The SBGSU statement added, “Russian media reported that Ukrainian servicemen on the island had been sent to Sevastopol” in Crimea.
On Friday, audio emerged of an exchange between the Ukrainian fighters and an officer of the Russian navy. In the exchange, the Ukrainians were heard to say to “Russian warship – go f*** yourself.”

I am stunned that Ukraine has put up this much resistance and/or how shitty russia has been. Like a large part of me feels like we're either being fed crazy propaganda or that Russia is employing the ol rope a dope strat or something. I get resolve to fight for your home, but it feels like Russia is getting destroyed on a "pound for pound" basis.
I vividly remember watching CNN in 1991 during Desert Storm. Wolf Blitzer and the CNN machine was actual news and fascinating to a 12 year old me. Seeing the videos of air raids in the crosshairs hitting their targets with precision accuracy less than an hour after the bombs were dropped was unreal at the time when dial-up internet was hitting the market. We had correspondents on the ground after the air raids when Stormin Norman led the invasion and saw it real-time. The entire world took numerous steps back after that display of military power.
Fast forward 31 years and we are not seeing anything close to the technology, force, or strength we saw back then from a “SuperPower” aiming to overtake the world.
The problem we have is that our “elected officials” do not fight a war to destroy their opponent. We have the most advanced weapons and technology on earth. China’s military is not proven. Russia is stuck in the Cold War and relies on Nike threats.

You think Putin is going to turn around and go home and that’s it
That’s not an option for him. He’s either going to do something crazy or bloody someone’s nose on the way out.
