MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama has filed a federal court claim to ownership of the wreckage of the last ship known to bring enslaved people from Africa to the U.S., a move the archaeologist who helped find the ship says will bolster protection of the site.
The so-called admiralty claim presented by Alabama in federal court asks a judge to declare the state the true owner of the Clotilda, which was discovered earlier this year in state waters. The claim, which was filed Friday, also seeks to ensure that the Alabama Historical Commission has the exclusive right to the site.
The historical commission said in a statement that the action is an attempt to prevent salvagers from disturbing the ship or taking artifacts from it.
James Delgado, a maritime archaeologist who helped lead the team that found and verified the wreck as that of the Clotilda, said Monday that the state is taking appropriate action and called the court step "another tool in the historic preservation toolbox."

From the article
LMAO @ Africatown and working-class being in the same sentence.

But the news is likely to resonate most forcefully in Africatown, a working-class community of about 2,000 people north of downtown Mobile

Never quite could reconcile why they said they found it, then they said they didn't only to then again say they did.
Throw off other researchers perhaps?

The original "we found it" turned out to be a different type of ship after proper researchers looked at the hull design. The 2nd "we found it" is a totally different ship hull in a different location, although reasonably close to the first. This type of hull checks out with the Cotilda records of design.

Rumor has it that the weight of all of the watermelon seeds sunk the ship.
Is that true?

North of Mobile. Prichard?
The old bridge in front of Scott Paper Co was called the Cochran-Africatown bridge. Africatown is basically the southern part of Prichard and northern Mobile city limits, along Craft Highway/43.

Update:
Alabama to exhibit artifacts from last US slave ship
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The state of Alabama will provide artifacts from the last slave ship to dock in the United States for a special public exhibition later this year, officials said Tuesday.
The Alabama Historical Commission, in a statement, said an exhibit named for the slave ship Clotilda is set to open this fall in Mobile, where the schooner arrived with African captives in 1860.
The artifacts include pieces of wood and metal taken from a muddy river bottom where the ship was discovered, said Jim Delgado, a maritime archaeologist who helped identify the wreck.
The History Museum of Mobile will add pieces from its own collection to help tell the story of the port's maritime history, the commission said. The city is working on plans for a new facility to house the exhibition.
