Don't sweat it. It is not common for a city to gobble up an entire county. It usually happens in places where a city tries to generate the most revenue off the citizenry.

Some burbs splinter off into towns of 400-1500 population in order get a better representation from their tax dollars. Then there are places like BR that won't allow such a thing without a massive fight. Orleans got there people whipped in line too.

Not sure if you got the reference or not... But I don't care because your answer is great and made me laugh

Honestly it makes sense and I really should have known and realized it. But hey no one's perfect. I'll gladly eat crow and admit I was wrong when I'm wrong.

Only thing I can think is Tombstone, but that doesn't fit

The trees by rush. Give it a listen and read the lyrics. It's about the maples wanting more sunlight but the oaks hog it all. So they pass a noble law. Where the trees are all kept equal. By hatchet. Ax. And saw.

Remember, Mitchell was elected by liberal whites and an African American population that is behind taking down the statues. It sucks looking at it from the burbs, but that is what his electorate wants. It will probably shoe him in to the 2nd District seat and then maybe some cabinet position later down the road like his Daddy.

Did he ruin the city? No. Does it suck to lose historic statues? Yes.

Seriously, this is nothing more than a footnote reference in 3-5years.

I would definitley be classified an Oak.

I'd try to think of myself as a tree though.

What an arse clown.

If he really believe in "let the reconciliation begin" crap then how can the process begin with half measures?

Just rip half the bandage off?

Backlash has been more than expected and he is trying to thread the needle with both sides to save his career. What a useless politician.

Because they were told to be upset about it.

The city has been in a downward trend for years. But that isn't his fault directly. Instead of making steps to bring together groups which have been drifting apart in the last decade, he seems to encourage and almost egg situations on that further divide the local and surrounding population.

This statue shite should have been nipped in the bud one way or the other LONG ago when it was first brought up. Instead it has become a hot topic and a source of contempt for many.

I think it's sad what the city is doing to the statues, but at the end of the day I have no say in it and I'll still regularly visit new Orleans as I love the atmosphere of the quarter. I grew up staying at my uncles apartment on the 3rd floor left corner of Jackson square damn near every other weekend.

I still believe that mitch the bitch has been counterproductive for the city and the surrounding areas. He could have done so much good. Instead he squandered it with stupid games.

My outrage isn't contempt, but rather a sadness of the overall atmosphere of the city. It just isn't the same as it was 5, 10 15 years ago.

Bah humbug

Lakeview is sorta suburban looking, but it's in the city limits.

When it was built in the 70's, New Orleans East was very suburb-ish, but Katrina converted what little was nice into a hoodrat wasteland.

The burbs are all out of the Parish in St. Bernard (Arabi and Chalmette), Jefferson (Kenner, Metairie, and the Westbank), and St. Tammany (Covington/Mandeville and Slidell). Some of the burbs can be pretty ghetto as well though, so there's no escaping it in Southeast Louisiana.

Again, as many have said, there isn't some great racial divide in NOLA right now. There isn't a race war happening or even sustained tension between the sides.

Downtown is cleaner than ever with new streets. Hotels poping up left and right. 100k+ visitor conventions multiple times a year. French Quarter streets getting a face lift. Tourism is booming! French Quarter crime is actually down big time.

Great! More fry cook, waiter, and maid jobs! Employment in ow skilled and low wage jobs. We win!!

Mean while, the brain drain continues in NOLA. Major companies moving away with the better jobs. But hey, let the reconciliation begin just with a large side order of bitterness.

NOLA's actually become a hotspot for tech startups. It's no Austin, Nashville, or Boulder, but it's starting to form its own scene. Also, the new hospital corridor has created a ton of new medical jobs.

Are we about to have some 60s erase race war riots? Absolutely not. But I can tell you absolutely the atmosphere is different today than it was a few years ago.

Look at it this way. You live with your siblings growing up. You see them every single day. You don't notice the changes in your siblings because you're blinded by proximity. Now, think of your cousin. You notice the changes in your cousin each time you see them. Same kind of thing. A resident won't pick up on slight changes in the atmosphere because they see it day to day. Meanwhile someone who comes say, twice a month, they can pick up on those changes more easily.

There is more racial strife today than just 5-10 years ago. And that's not isolated to new Orleans. It's everywhere. And it's sad because we should be past all the bullshite by now.

Can't we just get along and frick bitches n get drunk n have fun?! shite
