1. The episode is a little off in that they sort of pushed the idea that the Causeway "made it easier for commuters". The plain truth was that before the 1st Causeway structure was built in 1956 there were NO "commuters" coming from Mandeville, Covington, etc. Those were sleepy little towns unto themselves. The Causeway created the rapid suburban growth of the north shore (and commuters) in that area, much as I-10 to the east opened up the growth of the Slidell area.
Man, crazy how much a bridge changes things. I wish we could get in a time machine and take a stroll through pre-causeway northshore.

I wonder why people were fleeing once an option was opened up?

5. Amazingly, after 50 years, it still isnt paid for and money collected goes to a "commission " that is exempt from most public records requests.
Thankfully, despite numerous technological advances elsewhere, the toll-takers still have jobs!

Yep. I think they just pay in interest and refinance the principle over and over.

Technically, it's $3.00 one-way, but tolls are only collected on the north shore, so you pay double in Mandeville and nothing in Metairie.

a Causeway Marathon Run sounds like a fun event.

They had one of these at one time several years ago.
They actual ran it there for several years, from 1979 to 1984.

The logistics and engineering behind the building of bridges, dams, underwater tunnels, power plants, massive skyscrapers, etc. never ceases to amaze me. I am too much of a dumbass to even contemplate being able to achieve something like that.
A good friend from high school was part of Shell's civil engineering management team for its Bullwinkle platform. A few things he said while they were building it surprised me.
1. Shell inspectors had to certify each welder and a lot of welders had to come from Mexico to get it built. More already certified welders failed than passed.
2. Offshore jackets are built strong enough to withstand an atomic shockwave because the sea is more powerful. (I later found out that they toppled from hurricane waves lifting them up and not from straight on force.)
2.

Wait until you find out there are people who think we build these things and don't account for curvature of the earth.
Would would you need to account for the curvature of a flat object?

I feel dumb after watching this bc I’ve driven over it a hundred times and never noticed there’s 2 pilings on one side and 3 on the other.
