Why does it need to be so tall? It doesn't appear there are any major industries on the Calcasieu River north of the bridge so as to need it to be tall enough for large vessels.

It doesn't need to be anymore. The current bridge has a clearance of 135 feet. The new bridge will have a clearance of 73 feet.

It really is amazing how little is north of there compared to what can go under the current bridges.

There was supposed to be a ship building/maintenance dock up the river when they built it but the plans fell through so they made it that high for nothing.

Oh that's good to know. Yeah the old bridge was just way too tall for what's needed today.

Hopefully they make it 6 lanes wide with shoulders....

I dont see why it needs to be 73 feet of clearance.A lot of money could be saved if it were lowered to say 40 feet or whatever a tug with barges would need.

If the State of LA had a five gallon bucket of brains between them. They would break that bridge railing up and auction off the pieces. I would pay handsomely for a section. Instead, the railing will be "demolished" in the dark of night, loaded on a flatbed and delivered to some politicians hunting camp. You know it's true.

This bridge should have been funded and in the process of being built by now, but naw, let’s send more money to Ukraine.

Actually I think there is a plan to sell off the rail art.

Definitely has tug traffic. There was a small refinery upriver, and docks for ships at a now demolished rice mill.

I don't know what clearance is needed for modules to offloaded from barges for Sasol, Phillips or other facility north of I-10.

The Coast Guard requires a certain clearance above the 100 year flood river level. I believe its 52 feet if memory serves me correctly.

The Army Corps only dredges just past the bridge (not far). Plus, there's really not much land beyond that to develop major projects.

The new bridge was set at its height to accommodate the "Friend Ships" shipyard (where the USS Orleck used to be) in North Lake Charles. If that shipyard wasn't there, they could probably lower the height a little more.

Edited to correct end-point of dredging.

Is the new bridge actually going to be built? Or will it end up like the water park down the interstate?

I have it on good authority that it was built that tall because if Godzilla attacked from the south, he could easily pass under it, instead of knocking it down. Everybody knows that Godzilla is about 108 ft tall. Now if Mothra attacked, then all bets are off.
