A former sergeant major for the Louisiana Army National Guard has been indicted on federal fraud charges after U.S. attorneys say he lied on several official forms to gain supplemental pay from the federal government.
Randy M. Kiley Sr., 63, of Slidell was formally charged Thursday (Nov. 10) with two counts of wire fraud and two counts of making false statements, according to U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite's office.
Kiley served as an Active Guard Reserve soldier in the Louisiana National Guard for 35 years, spending his last years of duty assigned to Jackson Barracks, the indictment shows. He retired in July 2014 as a Sergeant Major, the second-highest rank achievable by a non-commissioned officer.
Kiley is accused of lying about his marital status to receive increased Basic Allowance for Housing and Family Separation Allowance pay.

This guy claimed he was married for ~10 years, when he was divorced, to gain extra housing pay. He also lied about the status of his dependent children at some point. Maximum sentence (not that he will get it) is up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
How much did he steal? Does BAH pay jump significantly for married soldiers? This all seems pretty dumb for what I guess is a few thousand extra dollars a year.

I think it's a significant amount of money. I have heard of dudes marrying someone prior to deploying just for the cash bonuses.

When deployed you get BAH if you can prove you rent or own a house. Separation pay is what you get if you are married and it's a pretty good pay increase
I know a few that married just to get that increase. And I know many many folks that made up fake lease agreements in order to receive BAH while deployed even though they were living with their parents

If he were the general of the la national guard he wouldn't face any consequences I bet.

Yep. Our unit had a bunch get busted with hash while in Afghanistan. Everyone e5 and above dropped one rank. E4s and below dropped to E1

The only time I've heard of the brass getting a somewhat just punishment was this o5 who recently got busted for child porn.
I think he was sentenced to 20 years in Leavenworth.
I had my brigade CSM get a dwi about a month from deployment. He was forced to retire and collected his retirement pay of course. I actually saw him on Friday night before his dui charge buying two cases of beer

He also scammed some FSA money during 3 deployments, totaling about 36 months.
I had no clue that the differential between single and married BAH could be $1,250/month. I assumed it was maybe $500, max.

I did a little searching and found a website call military-ranks dot org. I have no idea how accurate it is, but it says a a SGM w/ early-mid 30 years in makes mid-80s in base salary.
It doesn't sound like this guy was driven to crime out of necessity, but more likely straight up greed. I know that there are shitbags in every profession, but this kind of stuff bums me out.
