I don't get this. They, them, their are plural. That's going to sound as goofy and retarded as hell if you are referring to a single person. The use of such pronouns infringes on my right not to appear retarded

I don't think this pronoun issue is important, so if somebody wants me to use certain ones for him or her, I'll play along; if the person gives me shite for using the "wrong" one by mistake, that's when I say "Look, I'm just not going to give a shite. You can put up with me half-assing this at best or go hang out with somebody else."

For people who are interested in what the hell is going on about campus politics and gender there has been an escalating conflict between gender activists (and potentially enforcement of hate speech codes) at the University of Toronto that you can learn more about on professor Jordan Peterson's youtube page.
In an incomplete nutshell, activists there (as they wish to do in the United States) have managed to get the use "misuse" of gender pronouns codified as both a violation of university policy and a federal violation of law under the category of hate speech.
Some of the discussions between Peterson and profesors that oppose him have been shocking - including the direct claim by gender studies professors that biological sex is not related to human gender. This stuff is getting to the point that the Onion could not satirize it effectively because the claims actually being made are more ridiculous than satire.
