I was gonna say. It's a closed society and it is made up of old old Uptown families who used to run things....and quietly still do. Goldring might get an invite from Rex because of the whole pro bono publicothing, but guys that are Jewish you might find are more in Bacchus, not Comus or Proteus.

The old line families are doing quite well, in fact better than ever. It's sort of a misnomer to blame them for NOLAs situation entirely. Up until the mid 70s they were very aggressive in the economic life of the city. But then around 1976 or so they started to pull back because they saw the demographic picture.

Then after the oil bust of the early 80's combined with Dutch Morial and the burgeoning political power coming out of Central City. 7th Ward and Lower9/ Desire they began to consolidate their power and limit their investment in the city. I knew one of the Whitney's ....who was not named Whitney who told me that at one time they were lending money to black politicians for legit businesses and businesses that should work, worked in other cities and they ran it into the ground and stiffed them on the money.

After that they went real conservative on lending.

Perhaps most laughable is the theory that MG ran businesses out of town and helped grow Houston and Atlanta. MG is one of the few things that has prevented Nola from turning into Jackson.

Both things can be true

Question: was that part of NOLA society prejudiced against Catholics? We always talk about Newman and Country Day associated with them but not Jesuit or De La Salle

First King of Rex was Jewish.

Comus and Proteus traditionally did not allow Catholics, Jews, or Irish in.

Coleman and Goldring families aren’t in Proteus, Comus, or Momus. They are in Rex though.

Most conservatives will completely sell out their ideals to serve their own self interests. So will liberals.

Its only on the political talk board where people let those ideals guide every decision they make in their lives.

You would be so wrong in suggesting that members of either Krewe would be supporting Cantrell.....maybe some of them supported Landrieu because of his father but overall the membership of both is made up of conservative types....especially Proteus.

You're saying that Cantrell got elected and reelected with all these powerful people opposing her?

Yet another person that has no concept how politics work in NOLA or Louisiana.

Those people are the last vestigage of the Dixiecrats.

Further, in local elections, they support the person who will best help them, or lacking that, will leave them alone.

Desi was a threat to them. Desi would call them out and/or hit them up.

Which led to the rise of Liberty Bank, and when Liberty could not get enough capital to make a big enough impact... here comes Ashton Ryan to the "rescue" and you see how that worked out.

Probably is a mortgage lender or realtor…self inflated ego. Nobody cares or knows who you are except your mama. She probably is not too proud either.

Talking to Rex riders yesterday when the floats stalled close by. From what I heard, many were clearly from out of town and didn't seem to spend much time in New Orleans.

Pretty obvious this is the case when you watch the Rex ball on WYES.

Probably a century ago, but there has been a lot of inter marriage between the old "American" and French families. A lot of the Queens have been Sacred Heart girls but there is still a fair share of McGhee and Country Day. Newman grads have been a recent thing.

Jesuit and DLS have recently been a part of it. I know a lot of DLS in Proteus, but DLS is something of a "new" school.

Religion and what church you go to is not really anything of an issue anymore in Comus, Proteus and the old line organizations. Even being Jewish is not a barrier except in Comus and the Ball only organizations....you are in effect born into it.

Yep, the voting power resides in the black community, what the white "power base" wants is largely irrelevant. If the whites were dictating Desiree Charbonnet or Michael Bagneris would be mayor. Uptown is district A and B. A is very much a Republican stronghold, but B in Central City and E in the 9th is where the vote happens. Latoya may live in the Fontainebleau area but I think she was either District B or at large. Her support came from BOLD,SOUL and DAWN political organizations.

She did not need as much money as you think to get elected the first time.

????

Catholics were here near the start. Granted they mostly settled in the East, but many landed in Virginia.

They don't call it the British & Indian War.
