Kratom - The DEA failed, so now the FDA wants it illegal.

A few months ago the Drug Enforcement Agency wanted to make Kratom illegal, but a public outcry derailed those plans. Now the FDA is citing 36 deaths from Kratom to again go after this herbal supplement.
What is Kratom? In short it's a plant based herbal remedy for pain relief. Not only an alternative to opioids, but many swear by its use in treating opioid addiction & withdrawal.
IMO, the FDA is using Kratom as a means to militarize the FDA. The FDA is a reasearch & scientific agency, but they see huge money once the government gets around to funding the battle against the opioids crisis. They want to make sure they get most of that money, even the law enforcement aspect.

The FDA public health advisory on kratom follows the Drug Enforcement Administration's reversal or at least delay of plans to classify kratom as a controlled substance on the same level as heroin and LSD. Gottlieb says the FDA plans to work with the DEA to determine how kratom should be classified.

FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb also plans to tell his agency's criminal investigations staff that he may ask Congress for more authority and resources to fight the opioid epidemic, according to remarks prepared for delivery Tuesday afternoon.

The fact Gottlieb is speaking to the investigations staff is significant because "if they find people here who are opening the gates to these drugs, there may be opportunities for the FDA to investigate at a high level," says Joshua Sharfstein, former principal deputy FDA commissioner in the Obama administration.

Our government will always be FOR us, not against. Duh.

For us useful members of society, what is Kratom?

Big pharma lobby at work. There's absolutely no basis for such extreme action, yet the feds will find a way to ram it through. Legal opioids kill many more people per year.

"Linked" to kratom... so I wonder what other substances were present in the 36 deaths? This reeks of big pharma wanting to crush a natural alternative to their addictive and dangerous painkillers. Scum.
And 36... compared to the 90,000 annual alcohol-related deaths.

It is a plant that is being used, in lieu of pot, to treat opiod withdrawal symptoms.
See, the problem with opioids is that they're addictive, even at normally prescribed quantities. People with workplace or auto collision injuries are prescribed opioids and then become addicted. When cut off from the drugs, they go into withdrawals. Kratom can help ease the withdrawal symptoms and help people quit opioids. It also works as a pain reliever as a substitute for opioids.
Since people can grow and make their own Kratom, of course big pharma (which sells opioids) wants it shut down.

It is for me the best over the counter pain remedy for my lower back. It works better than ibuprofen but not as well as opiates. My doctor used to be able to call in a prescription of hydrocodone a couple times per year when my back was really killing me but not anymore. Instead of making an appointment I just keep a pack of Kratom tablets on hand.

There is a huge opiod epidemic and Kratom is the answer!
It should not be illegal, it should be the first line drug choice for pain. The reason for so many opiate overdose is is due to being able to double dose. With Kratom, you cannot double dose. Your body can only absorb so much. Many users find a ceiling to which it has an effect, and no matter how much they use they cannot go above that ceiling. It is a built-in safety system. Many users will eventually realize that they can reduce the dose by 1/3 and still have the same effects.
This stuff is a godsend to people who are addicted to opiates. But as far as it being dangerous to someone who is not an addict, it is less addictive than cigarettes and alcohol, maybe the same as coffee, or sugar, or marijuana.
This is a leaf, and long-term health effects are minimal to the indigenous user.
This product could crush big pharma. It can be used for pain headache anxiety stress depression social interactions, sleep, focus.....
There are definitely companies right now trying to make this drug into a pill.

I've seen this at a store in bossier city
I assumed sex pills
Guess it's laced with fentanyl in order to kill people

How do I find pure Kratom that doesn't have proprietary blends I don't trust?
Posted on 11/14/17 at 2:48 pm to BobRoss
I’m pretty involved in the recovery community and I’ve been hearing about Kratom for the last 2 years. Yes, it’s a naturally grown bark or something. I’ve never taken it but I’ve seen it sold in shady gas stations, you know, the same ones that sell crack pipes disquised as roses, sex pills, etc. I’ve personally known 4-5 people that have abused it for the buzz it gave them, but then again, these guys were all self admitted drug addicts. They were all newly sober and resorted to using Kratom to side step drug test. Something led all of those 4-5 to relapse on opiates, I’ll let y’all decide if it was the Kratom or if the Kratom was just a step towards their eventual relapse. My opinion is that both are probably true. It’s very popular and widely talked about among those in ‘recovery’ though, I do know that.

This is an important insight. "Newly sober" so sober less than 3-6 months, most do relapse right? Who could really say if Kratom lead them to relapse. Ive heard hundreds of accounts of people being able to come off of prescription opiods with Kratom by themselves, but not so much from Heroin.
A better question- Would they have got addicted to harder drugs had they had the option of Kratom?
