I've got friends that are still in the military or with DoD contractors with current clearances and they're even cautious about what they text me

I love flying as a passenger in a King Air. I hate flying in "active weather." Thankfully, I rarely have to be anywhere "in a hurry" so if the weather is bad and can't be avoided, I don't go on the flight.

A lot of nasty weather the last couple of weeks.

A lot of gusty winds, wind shear, etc.

geeze my dad had to have those addressed back when he was still a corporate pilot eons ago. Was your buddy's son riding in an old plane or did Beech have a brain fart again?

no, he was in the right seat building flight time, the pilot didn't do weight and balance computation before takeoff, took off over gross weight, lost an engine right after takeoff and put in the wrong rudder input, he killed everyone on board

Suspicious

He fills up at Pilot truck stops so he's pretty much a pilot

I've pulled a few BE20s from the boneyard after long term storage. Flew them day VFR, gear down to a depot facility 8 hrs away. Fun times.
