Not thinking of specifically that (although a possibility), but causing undo pain or trauma to a child that could make them fearful of dentists.

are yall really concerned that your dentist might molest your kids if you're not there? do your dentists not have hygienists or others working in there with them? or if you do get that vibe why the FFFF wouldn't you switch dentists.

this is what's wrong with parents today. Does stuff like that happen, yes. Are we required as parents to prevent it, absolutely. But we have the option to be ultra super protective and be there every second of every day to fight off any evil do'ers or we can make smart decisions to allow them grow into well adjusted independent individuals.

Do any of us who are not dentists know what the dentist is doing and if it’s proper??
I would hope you would know to ask questions if something did not feel right or you felt something was wrong.

that's almost as bad. you're saying you're worried your dentist will intentionally hurt your child? get a new dentist! for fricks sake, what kind of dentists are yall going to?

i can guarantee you your kid's dentist doesn't want you hovering over them while they try to do what they've been professionally trained to do.

No fool, but if they do something that hurts the child or something they should not, is a 5 year old going to be able to question? Some call being there for your child "hovering."

Kids will be way less dramatic with the parents not hovering. Also you know you wanted to bring the siblings into the exam room as well. That’s a huge distraction for the kid getting checked. Let the dentist do his job.

If your child has cavities as a 5 year old, I’m sorry- you’re a mediocre parent at best.

I'll defend this. i thought this same thought pre kids.

But i've come to realize kid's teeth are weird. I have 4 kids, all their teeth are different. One gets a cavity if he thinks about sweets, one has perfect teeth, one's teeth were too close together and needed crowns, one we had to extract some teeth because there was not enough space, one had what's called shark teeth where the permeant ones came out before the baby ones fell out. Maybe you were the perfect parent and had kids with perfect teeth, for that i commend you. I'll just continue to keep my ship pointed in the right direction as best i can.

I operate under the premise that you trust absolutely no one with your child until they are old enough to identify and defend against improper behavior from another person.

I know if 3 people who’s children were sexually assaulted, one done by a 12 year old neighbor boy who was a babysitter for their son (1 hour grocery & gas run a mile away) and another done by a teacher.

I’d normally be on the side of “let the professionals do their thing”. But there was that one big time pediatric dentist in town that was abusing the kid patients and wouldn’t let the parents in the operating rooms, so idk now

* ALONE, yes, no one should be ALONE with your kid. if the dentist or surgeon or whoever is ALONE with them, then that's a you problem.

When I was a child, which wasn’t that long ago, my parents weren’t gigantic pussies and didn’t do anything like this. Why do you need to be back there with your child for a basic operation?

Right. I have known two kids who were abused - one by a neighbor babysitter, one by a family friend (both men). I don’t expect it from anyone, but I certainly wouldn’t write it off just because someone has a medical degree. Look at the weird Ochsner doc who set up cameras. Not wanting to leave kids alone (especially with men) does not make you a helicopter parent.

During Covid, many healthcare places banned parents from coming back with kids. I thought it was nuts how parents turned their kids over to strangers so willingly.

again, ALONE being the key word and secondly 2 kids out of how many kids have you known all time? do you know any kids that have died in automobile accidents? should we stop driving?

you as a parent set up the proper parameter's and let them live.

You should be waaay more concerned about the cost. That will soon override this I can assure you.

Parents are not allowed back in the hospital operating rooms for various types of other surgeries. You lose the sterile environment. Most dentists who have that in place are doing it for that reason and only for bigger procedures. Filling seems excessive, but like others said, it might just be where he draws the line with things so the kids are better behaved.

I think trying to set up the dentist’s office parameters is a little weirder.

what? the parameter is "if i can't be with my child, you need to have multiple adults in the room." if they can't or won't accommodate that, time to move on.
