In US states where children must turn 5 by September 1 in order to start kindergarten that year, children born in August, just before the cutoff, are more likely to be diagnosed with and treated for ADHD, according to a study published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

quote:

Dr. Dimitri Christakis, director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development at Seattle Children's Research Institute, wrote in an email that "This study confirms on a larger scale what other studies have shown on a smaller one. It confirms that there may be developmental confounders in the diagnosis of the condition and that the relative immaturity of young children's brains can make those that are merely younger at school entry demonstrate behaviors consistent with ADHD."

age cutoffs should be calendar year, not school year.

That age cutoff is not enforced in LA, at the very least, to my knowledge. I had classmates that had November birthdays.

ETA - Looked it up for LA. When I was in school the cutoff was you had to be at least 4 years and 8 months old to start kindergarten. Now it is you must be 5 by 9/30.

My birthday is in late August. Glad I was held back a year instead of being drugged by some lazy arse doctor.

My son’s birthday is in June and we decided to do 5K instead of Kindergarten. He was ready academically but we didn’t want to risk the social issues that can come with being a year younger than everyone.

I see examples of this teaching 8th grade. The difference in physical and social maturity between some of my students is astounding and it’s almost always because a huge difference in age.

It should be up for discussion during Kindergarten and 1st Grade whether these kids should be held back. The problem is most parents all got hooked on Adderal in college so they think it is some superdrug that will make their kids better and schools seem to hate holding kids back...unless it is a male at West Monroe who is going to be a future football recruit.

I wouldn't want to sign my kid up for a lifetime of pills. I would rather just try and hold them back first.

they wouldn't let me hold her out. i wanted that option. my daughter started k-6 out slow every year, then came on strong at the end of the year grade wise. think a year later start would have helped her at least in the early years.

but now i see no issues with her in high school. and she will start college just before turning 18, gets an extra year in the work force vs later start

ADHD is so misdiagnosed it may as well not exist anymore. Arbitrary age cutoffs and the resultant correlation to diagnoses proves this. Of course a barely 5 year old is going to act out more than an almost 6 year old. They are literally almost 17% younger in age than their older classmates. fricking ridiculous.

Most of ADHD can be blamed on our curriculum. We let kid play and explore until 2nd grade then we make them sit in a desk for 7 hours a day. It’s fricking bullshite, but hey, at least we have testing data on our 3rd graders.

It used to be December 31 in Baton Rouge when I was growing up (I graduated 30 years ago). It is now September 30.

I was born in July, 2nd or 3rd youngest growing up in my class, honor roll, NHS, etc... 2 masters degrees. So much bs about Adhd these days. That being said my oldest was born end of sept, he just turned six, went to daycare with 4 year olds and then we kept him in pre-k4 at a new school just so he could mature gradually instead of being behind a year behind his peers... working out great.

Something else that should be included in the report is a note about economic circumstances. Wealthier people can keep their kid in daycare/preschool an extra year. Poor people can’t. Therefore the younger kids are not only less developed but potentially coming from less stable environments.

I know it was painful for my wife and I to decide to spend an extra $10k for preschool when we could be pocketing that money.

I don't know about ADHD, since it's a socially engineered fabrication of big pharma, but I can attest to a guy I know - born on Oct 26 and being a complete and utter dumbass.
