I originally thought this was stupid but how can anyone disagree with this policy? Nike went political and he doesn't want to implicitly fund a politically divisive message with taxpayers' money. Seems reasonable to me.

The problem is, lots and lots of companies large and small use political-driven advertising. So unless he is going to ban all of those, I call BS on his "reasoning". Where is his ban on government money being used to spend money at Chic-Fil-A, or Hobby Lobby?

Also, he banned private charities from doing business with Nike. That's not taxpayer money.

To the extent taxpayer money is being used, it needs to be spent in the way that gets the most bang for the buck.

Hope he isn’t planning to run for parish president in the future. If a politician is going to enact a policy that anybody with half a brain knew would ruffle some feathers on one side of the political spectrum, at least have the guts to stand behind it and not reverse course less than a week later because he got criticism that Stevie Wonder could’ve seen coming.

What if he had good reason to believe those private charities were mostly made up of conservatives ? He might have been concern that money wound stop rolling in if it was used to buy Nike. I’m also willing to bet a large % of people who actually go out and vote in Kenner Brah are also conservative.

Nike is using the police brutality on black folks issue as a marketing campaign to sell them shoes. Talk about woke. I know a couple that went out and bought several hundred dollars in Nike gear yet they can’t afford to put a full tank of gas in their car. I feel bad for them. They are being taken advantage of and don’t even know it.

Yea and I bet their two little kids, La-a and Orangello will now go hungry because of it.

I’m guessing he’s referring to playground booster clubs, which based on my understanding are just groups of parents who volunteer and help out by doing things like running concession stands and doing fundraisers to help cover costs for uniforms and equipment. They raise money on their own, separate from local government funding.

Booster Clubs used to be independent of Kenner government. I know the one I was a board member of in the 80’s registered with the Secretary of State and never needed anything from the city. I think it changed when the banned beer from any activities except adult nights, softball, etc. the Booster clubs made a lot less money and were partially funded by the city.

I messaged Michelle Lawler, who wrote the memo and got no reply.(msl next to EBZ on signature) This was before it went viral. They should have just said it was fake and it wouldn't have gone viral even if true. I read the Atlanta paper online to see them talk trash about the Saints and they had this story up.

How do you know Michelle?

CFA and HL didn’t publicly take a side on a political issue. They were doing their own thing and the media and people that disagreed with them blew it up when they found out. If Hobby Lobby paid for endorsements from Mike Pence or Joel Olsteen that would be different.

Not saying their purposes were right or that Nike is wrong but it’s a bit different.

ETA: the whole thing is stupid and the mayor is stupid for even entering the foray

I disagree. Now if you had stated that choosing to exercise that right may result in termination from a private comlany...cool beans. The right to protest, however, most definitely exists.

It's been ruled on already. You can protest all you want. Not at work. And that is the end of story.
