Only on the OT can a decent conversation about fines in the US turn into 5 pages of the opinions of 4 posters on camel toe.
I can't say I'm disappointed though.

Gotta say that those 4 or 5 have an avg post count of about 90,000.

and I have been robbed a ton, despite all the bullshite and a few orders I have never gotten a penny of restitution. The State has made thousands off of me being robbed. Explain that shite.

Shouldn't jail nonviolent offenders?
bullshite. Wait til some one defrauds you out of your life's savings. Completely non violent

I understand, but at the same time, you'll never get that money back if the perp is sitting in the county jail. Put his arse to work and garnish his wages for restitution.
It isn't perfect but I think your consequences should go towards righting a wrong rather than paying a fine to the state or lining the pockets of a privately owned prison.

The state is hurt because civilized societies can't tolerate thievery. But most inner cities nowadays don't qualify as civilized society, so your point stands.

For all the people saying it's just poor scumbags, beware.
Get married, have 2.5 kids, get divorced. Pay lawyer, pay bills, pay child support.
I have a couple divorced buddies that make a lot money and are pretty dam poor. Low income people get F'd on the reg, the middle class laughs. The middle class get F'd on the reg, money wise.

Well you typically have to apply for the restitution. Have you?

The Justice Department is discouraging state court systems from jailing defendants who fail to pay fines or fees, warning against practices that it says run afoul of the Constitution and erode community trust.
Why stop at poor people? If anyone should be able to get away with breaking the law it's the people that pay the taxes that fund the salaries of law enforcement.

alright if someone is willing to pay, if not then community service is better than locking someone up.
What do we do if they won't do the assigned community service?
