re: Justice Department: States Should Not Jail Poor People Over Fine Nonpayment

It probably cost more to put them in jail than the fine is worth in many cases. When I worked a part time job for a local government department, the jail nurse use to use our office to submit POs. Sometimes she would leave her files on the desk and I could not believe the money the sheriffs department would spend on prisoners. The cost to have another parish transport a prisoner to the parish I worked for was ridiculous, but that wasn't nothing compared to the amount of money spent on medical care. Prisoners get better healthcare (free of charge) than a lot of hard working people, with insurance, receives.

How about give everyone regardless of income an option - cash or community service? I can go with that.
some of our judges, including the 2 most hardcore ones, allow people to do community service (at higher than min wage, even) to pay off their fines and court costs. i really do want to give them plenty of credit for the option b/c it does help out people

I'd buy a condo on that corner

Pretty good segment. I've seen it happen. You get people arrested on drug charges and they take the vehicles. Honestly, you can get them to lessen/drop the charge if you just let them keep the vehicle (depending on how much is left on it to pay off).
