I say end the defined benefit plans for new hire teachers and let them pay into SS and have a 401k like most of the working people.
There is no reason the government class should get better tax treatment from the state than the rest of and the rest of us are subjected to higher taxes as government employees lobby for more and more benefits.

Offshore workers are off 6 months of the year and make twice as much money.

How is that detrimental to you? It's not like you paid SS for most of your life like the rest of us did.
So let me understand what you are saying:
You want to discount my 35 years of paying towards Social Security, work after I retire so I can pay more Social Security, and then barely collect any benefit...if at all. Am I understanding you correctly, because it seems as though that's what should be gathered from your post.

No if you paid 35 years you should get SS as you do. If you paid in 35 years then the WEP impact for you is small.
You want all the benefits of paying into SS even though you only paid it on part time earnings most of your career?
Also--you should be paying Louisiana state income tax on your teacher pension. There is NOTHING fair about government retiree pensions being exempt from state income tax while the rest of us pay it.
I bet you will not post what you and your wife draw in pensions and when you started drawing them.

I'm still working so that's no possible. It will be between 35-40k per year though.

What did I win? A tax free pension?

So am I working after I retire? Please make up your mind. As for WEP being a small impact, define small.

More than a few of those pensions are 6 figures.
I honestly would like to know the number of state employees that have retired at this level. My proposal would be to cap retirement at $50,000 per year with a $500 per year COL increase. FWIW, for the better part of a decade my pay was frozen while the portion I paid for benefits increased substantially. It is what it is. To act as though teachers are the biggest issue facing our state is disingenuous imo. As far as DROP is concerned, who knows if I will even get to that point. 33 years in a classroom in this day and age is a feat that is tough to accomplish imho.

They should make SLT's the raise instead of STEP. Hell if I bust my arse and perform/get my students to perform the 300 one time bonus I get a 4 score is not worth it. Make that 300 my raise next year and if my fellow teacher scores a 1 or 2 then they're shite out of luck.
