Mine is in his third week at Fort Jackson. Just gor our first letter yesterday. He is doing good and I am looking forward to that first phone call besides the one saying he was there.

My parents didn't answer.
I couldn’t hear a damn thing so idk if they answered or not when I called. DIs were yelling too loudly. Imagine that.

To all: we used the Sandboxx app to send letters, which makes it faster and easier.
Type your letter in the app, and it gets printed up and delivered to them in a few days.

There was some noise in the background! I hope he heard me tell him I love him and how proud I am.

That’s awesome. I don’t think my parents answered either but that was well before cell phones. Wish him the best.

Boot camp is what you make it. It’s a challenge but you can definitely make it immensely more challenging on yourself if you don’t move fast or don’t be loud. Ensure he knows that. Also make sure he knows that it’s for the best the longer he goes without the DIs knowing his name.
He’ll think the DIs are supermen when he meets them. They’re mostly just as full of shite as any other marine. And for the most part, they’re more full of shite than other Marines. He’ll learn all the customs and courtesies in boot camp, but he’ll learn how to be a Marine when he gets to the fleet. Don’t tell him that.

Was in the suck from 91-97. Boot in 91. Don't remember making a phone call to my parents to let them know I had arrived. Either I don't remember this or they didn't do it then??
I will say that SOI was physically tougher than boot. Not as many head games though. Back then if you were infantry, you still had to do MCT and SOI. Very dumb.
Agree 10X on the letters. Makes a huge difference.

The phones, like everything in the USMC, look like they were out there in the 1960s. I’m pretty sure that they were rotary dial phones. May be mistaken there, it’s either rotary dial phones or the phone booth type of phones.

Had to do the same thing when I was there in 2013, it was very stupid.

Pretty neat how it works, and actually finding your son in the app is cool.

I forgot to figure in the time change when I arrived at MCRD in San Diego...when I tried to call my mom at work to let her known I'd m made it, she was already gone. I didn't get another call. Lol

Semper Fi! And like others said, send letters. They really help. Tell him to attend worship service on Sunday morning. The “Hats” cannot mess with you there. Keep us posted. And great job on raising your son!

Parris Island gets the pub, but as someone who went to boot camp at MCRD San Diego and then served my first 2.5 years of active duty on Parris Island, San Diego is much tougher and its not even close LOL! Semper Fi! young man you are beginning a journey which you will remember the rest of his life!

San Diego Marine here. Fall of 1968. Only 8 weeks of boot camp back then but had to do a lot more combat training for many weeks after, getting us ready for the Nam.
No time for any kind of phone calls. They ordered us to write a lot of letters. Boot camp was a violent place back then.
As for training, Camp Pendelton’s mountainous terrain was a killer. Mt. Mutherfricker was a curse.
Semper Fi.
