I was a tiny pup when this happened, but watching the film it kind of reminds me of some goings-on of today. Does anybody remember this or at least know about it?

If I remember the story right, they had some like 1 cent beers special and supposed to burn disco records after the game. People got shite faced and it got way out of hand. They got on the field and trashed the place.

A rock promoter and DJ named Steve Dahl came up with he idea, the Veecks were in control of the WHite Sox and they were promoters first. They had a the team play in shorts in 1976.

A doubleheader, cheap beer, young people, a White Sox loss...and they took it out on disco records.

loved going to MLB games in the 70s, you could buy the cheapest tickets and then "filter" your way down each inning and by the end of he game you were field side right by the dugout, beer sales ended when the game was over, maybe

When I was very young, we didn't have a tv. But I could pick up Chicago White Sox games on my radio for some reason..

"Speared by Melton at third!"

Listened to the White Sox and Astros games with my brothers. We kept statistics and averages. I wish I could find those old notebooks.

RIP Lowell Pass

ETA: re: the old scoring notes, my bf from hs, and I just know that we played ball against you, was the biggest nerd about that, he went on to be a sports writer and retired after doing that for about 40 years, he still has all of that type of stuff, including all of his Stat-O-Matic cards

While they were setting fires on the field, they should have thrown those White Sox uniforms on the pile.

Should have started a thread with a meaningful title and some of us would have clicked on it.

Greg Veeck (his brother) was a really funny teacher in the Geography department at LSU in the mid-late 90s. This and the Cubs came up in convo often.

Starting around '77, I would listen to all astros games on WJBO. With a sheet of plain white paper, I made my own scorecard. I took the glass out of an 8 x 10 portrait frame and used it to cover the paper. I used a black marker to fill out "the scorecard" for every game and would wipe it clean before the next game. A year or two later, my brother and I invented some weird arse dice game with rules about what was on out, hit, walk, etc.

This all changed when we ordered ABPA baseball from an ad the back of Street and Smiths. Sent them a money order from a 7-11 we saved all winter for. Those games resulted in some epic slap fights or one of us throwing the dice into the yard.

Here's the first half of the doubleheader, plus the postgame mayhem Harry Caray does the honors for the White Sox before his move over the North Side. LINK

This is what my brother did. He had notebooks full of statistics.

He's a CPA now.

We used to go to Arlington Stadium a couple of games per year w our little league teams. Back in the days of "don't get lost and behave" parenting. Once inside, we roamed the entire place watching from section to section. Of course, we always wound up as far away from the parents as possible and at the tip top row lol.
