This thread is wild. I get not agreeing with the political views of a 1960s hippie. But I had no idea that the official Tigerdroppings opinion on John Lennon was that he 1) was an evil person 2) had no talent and 3) we’re glad he was killed.

They’re not my favorite band of all time, but OBVIOUSLY the Beatles were supremely talented and changed music over a short period of time. I also think that John’s solo music is the best of the 4.

The man had flaws. So do I. So do you.

Count me in the group that thinks the world lost something good when he died.

Paul wrote pop music for the most part. John wrote stuff that spoke to the heart and emotions. Obviously Yesterday being a considerable outlier.

John had so many faults, but who doesn't. I imagine he could have turned into a decent elder statesmen much like Paul has.

he seemed to have changed his outlook when he was coming out of that self-imposed hiatus right before he was killed, seemed mellower, more relaxed, would have like to have seen more of him going forward, I'll never understand the Ono thing though

Beatles made some of my favorite music, and John's talent is off the charts. Great artist, terrible human, a tale as old as time.

You have to separate art from artists, if you want to enjoy art. I cannot think of Lennon without thinking of how horrible a person he was to so many people in his life. Especially Julian, his son from his first marriage. He made many cold, disparaging remarks about his own child. It must have been hard for Julian to process such cruel remarks by his own father, who had clearly chosen to leave him behind. I cannot imagine a father speaking publicly this way about his own child.

John left Julian a pittance in his will. Julian sued to get more, and eventually got a decent settlement out of it. Interestingly, his half brother Sean was in favor of treating Julian well in the estate litigation, and the two of them appear to have been quite friendly and even close. That speaks well of the character of both of them.

As for Lennon. I think he mellowed out a good bit toward the end of his life. But part of me thinks certain woke things nowadays would've been right up his alley and he'd have been insufferable to deal with or listen to on certain topics. But I'd take that bullshite if it meant we got another 30 years of music out of him though. Not all of his music was for me, but he had some bangers though. And to say or imply that he wasn't talented is just an outright lie and the person saying it doesn't even believe that.

My piping hot take of the day : The Beatles are actually UNDERRATED…. Not even kidding .

These days, that's likely true to a degree. Especially with younger people.

People saying the Beatles are overrated are just stupid IMO. You can dislike or even hate them all you want, but their impact on music as a whole, musicians, the world, etc. are inarguable facts.

It's like Seinfeld. I don't like that show, but I won't say it sucks or is overrated, because I also saw how much it influenced shows, pop culture, etc. It just wasn't for me. And I'm good with that.
