Nevertheless, there is a serious issue here with the apparent (obvious) ability of the child and adolescent population to fight off Covid more effectively than the adult and senior population. By now we should have enough data to adjust the public health response.

Also, if one of the primary reasons for masking at school and on-line learning is to protect the teachers and other adults in the system, then perhaps the more effective approach is to ensure that the adults are either vaccinated or sign waivers accepting the risk of working unvaccinated. Put the responsibility on the people most likely to require more extreme protection methods.

This

Masking children, especially 2 year old kids, is absurd. Its laughable human beings are coming up with this

We talking about the Alabama doc saying her patients are begging to be vaccinated right before intubation?

Isn’t this more or less what’s going on? Teachers are getting vaccinated because they like teaching in person. Requiring kids who are 6 and over to wear a mask while in school probably isn’t much of a burden, though I do wonder at the long term psychological effects of such a requirement. I think most schools are going with in person, masked learning. And the masking seems to be simply to prevent (as much as reasonably able) a potential spread event that spirals off into a bunch of kids bringing it home.

If children were really being hit hard by this strain, I would think the public health officials would be screaming from the mountain tops. There would be no better way to get people vaccinated than if children were affected. FWIW, we know several folks in pediatrics and all have said RSV is a really big problem at the moment. COVID still miniscule for the kids.

But RSV kills what, 500 kids a year? And in well over a year COVID has killed fewer than 400, many/virtually all of those kids who had serious underlying conditions. And we are/were in the middle of a major RSV spike that was putting pressure on pediatric hospitals.

But despite this, RSV got the local news "scary new spike in child illness" treatment for two days and then we went back to COVID hysteria.

People have gotten completely myopic about COVID and lost track of how we deal with normal illnesses that are, especially in the vaccination era, comparable in terms of death/severity. "There are 11 kids hospitalized!" is the story, not "well, how many kids are normally hospitalized with a virus going around, is this extremely abnormal?"

is there a RSV vaccine available to the public that would solve this issue?

Lockdowns virtually stopped RSV in its tracks

Why arent you screaming at the top of your lungs again to lock away and save the kids?

RSV is fricking scary man. I've got 3 young kids and there is a massive outbreak all over the place. Two of our friends had toddlers in the ER with it.

And I'm still sending my kids to school/camps and no one is asking them to wear a mask for this really bad respiratory virus.

The double standard is mind blowing.

I have four year old twins who have no issues wearing a mask on an airplane, so… no. I have experience with preschool kids.
